As for being illegal, yes and no, if it was put through a roadside emissions test it would fail, and if you read the small print bits for an MOT all cars after a certain year have to be fitted with catalytic convertors, but an MOT is only worth the paper its written on whilst its in the testing station.

I own my own company, I’m 30 y/o, have a nice house, I don’t wear or own any jewellery/Burberry/tracksuits/baseball caps etc, my girlfriend doesn’t own any "chav" accessories, we don’t claim any benefits, steal, do drugs, park outside MacDonald’s with tunes blasting out, intimidate the elderly, we aren’t on ASBO's (
) etc etc...
Oh and as for the car, I use it on the strip for straight-line events (see the results for SSII), the exhaust has been declared to my insurers which I pay extra for and is actually there to increase performance. Oh yeah, how exactly would I "get done" as you put it?

In St Helens, the best town on the planet, I was pulled 27 times in a 12 month period when I was 18 and drove an e-reg 1.1 escort pop back in 1992-1993.
In the end we filed an offocial complaint for harrasment and the chief cunstable of Mersyside Police (commandant lassard or similar) came to my house to apologise and promised I would be left alone. I was never pulled again
In 1997 (or thereabouts) an ethnic dude was pulled 25 times in 12 months, filed it as RACIAL harrasment and got ££££ compo as a result

Unfortunately if you're young and or drive big boys cars you're gonna get pulled over from time to time. Just be respectful and hope its not a prat of a policeperson with 'poor pay crap hours jealousy' that pulls you over...

As i said in my post, 7 times in court, 6 times no case to answer, did you read those last 4 words mate, NO CASE TO ANSWER. That is an entirely different verdict to not guilty.
So, if that comment was directed at me, the thought of lucky doesnt come into it, sheer harrasment. But thanks you for sharing a similar ******** attitude that is commely found in the force.
I must also add, id that comment was not directed at me, then a sorry is in order, but the same applies to any clown sharing the same oppinion

You would "get done" by the police for driving with an exhaust system thats unsuitably loud for crowded old Britain, thats how.
Not everyone apreciates the fact that you like to do some drag racing or whatever, why you feel its okay to drive around with an exhaust that is obviously illegaly loud, and then trying to justify it because you like to do track events (emphasis on the "you"), indicates a disregard for other people that have to put up with your "burble" tractor racket while you drive it on the public road, and this does scream out that you do have chav tendencies, as a large part of being a chav is disregard for others.
If you are the intelligent company owning individual you so modestly describe (applause please), maybe you are also intelligent enough to appreciate that you are affecting other people with your noise, and if the Police feel its illegally loud, then it must be pretty bad.
Get an exhaust with a removable baffle, why the hell would you drive around with an overly loud exhaust on normal roads without a suitable baflle? unless the local lads appreciate the fact you have a noisy car.

I'm pretty sure that even if you tell your insurance company that you have changed the exhaust, if you had an accident and the pipe was found to be illegal for any reason, ie: noise or emmissions, the insurance company would be within their rights to not pay out.

so long as the car has a valid insurance certificate, i would think they would have a real hard job in getting a successful decision in court saying you were not in fact covered.

There was a case a few years back where it was accepted by the court that if the insurance company took your money then they accepted the risk. While I am sure that the true legal situation is much more complex than that it does, however, seem likely that, given good representation, you could field a similar argument along the lines that they accepted the risk that you had a non-standard exhaust and that you paid for this additional risk.

i thought there was a thread in the scotish section about someone getting convicted, due to having a PPP backbox. He wrote to IM/ Subaru asking for help in the court case and was told they would refund his fine!!!!!!

Took it to an MOT testing station, it passed, dropped off the certificate to the police station, kept a copy which is in the glove box just in case it happens again. End of.

Well, it obviously isnt that loud then, and providing you dont drive like a muppet around houses etc, then I guess I was wrong about it being too loud for general road use.
As thats the case, I guess one of use owes the other an appology, which I accept
Ive been wound up lately by chavs driving round the housing estate recently like idiots, with massively loud exhausts, plus a scoob down the road with a big burbly exhaust, and it does start to wind a person up (ie, me), possibly because they actually think they're cool because of it, and everyones looking at them with envy, meanwhile its more like disdain.
As thats the case, I guess one of use owes the other an appology, which I accept

I must be lucky, I picked my car up and on the drive home over took and was followed by a policeman on a dual carriage way, he just smiled as I pulled in, in front of him. Since then I have had no problems, touch wood, and seen lots of police cars. The police in Cornwall seem to be OK, I am 29 and wear mostly surfy gear. Also saw loads on motorways from cornwall to doncaster and no probls. I have a loud-ish exhaust. Hopefully will keep being lucky.

I know exactly what you mean, there's a house a bit further down the road from me and they have a son who's mate has a Civic that has a very loud exhaust and he lets everyone know when he's there, a combination of stupid sound system and pulling into the street flatout, cant believe his parents have gone off it at him. I have asked my neighbours if my car bothered them, they all said not as I dont take the pi55 and rev the engine. They can hear the car but as one of them said, its not intrusive.

but i thought the procedure was that a copy had to be posted off to the courts/ summons dept.
