I think people can get a bit too obsessed with octane ratings myself.
If tis a UK impreza withut any mods or the PPP then there is no reason why it shouldn't, Subaru say that 95RON is fine IIRC.

BUT the car would run better on Super!

I can't believe that the Optimax shortage is down to just 6 tankers. 6 tankers can not supply the whole of the UK.
What I suspect that has happened is that because of the Hemel Hempsted fires, there is a lack of fuel available, so Shell is consentrating on producing 95 RON, as most consumers buy this, leaving production of Optimax until fuel stocks are back to normal.
Bit of a Pi55er though, as I only have a quarter of a tank left. Tesco don't sell 99 RON around Darlington, and I've yet to find a BP garage that's selling Ultimate.

This is possible, but with regards the tanker shortage, Optimax tankers deliver to two garages unlike a unleaded/diesel which drops its whole load at the same place.

Shell have writen to me advising that they are 'concentrating' on delivering unleaded/diesel.

I filled up with 97ron at an esso in n. bristol today, and half the 97 pumps were empty, no probs with any of the other fuel types.

So maybe the prob is affecting all forms of higher octane fuel available in certain areas

Hope it gets sorted soon hey!

Both cars are UK and standard. Not sure what the basis for saying the car would run better on super than 95 octane, has this been proven, or is it just an assumption that people make?
Obviously modded cars may well need the higher octane to stop them from self-destructing.

The higher the RON the fuel is the more potent it is.

Whatever Ron you decide to run your car on based on your own research, UK or import, make sure your tank is full of your decided choce, and have the ecu reset (or diy). The car will then run it's best with your choice, try both and decide for yourself!

Originally when I got my MY05 EU WRX I put normal 95 ron petrol in then noticed a sticker on the fuel cap cover which said use 98 so switched to optimax noticed an improvement at first but now not so sure. Does the ECU have to be reset or does it deal with the petrol type automatically?

So is that why it has a 97 or 98 RON sticker on the inside of your fuel flap then?

Personally I always use Optimax! 98 RON

But... this issue has been dealt with lots of times before.

I quote from the Subaru owner's manual:

7-3: "the use of unleaded Gasoline with a RON of 95 (i.e regular) or higher is recommended!"

The PPP cars are recommened to be run on super though and definately won't run as well on regular....that's from Mike Wood of Prodrive.

As for the poster who enquired about the benefits of SUL. Scoobies have ECUs with active ignition adjustment facilities, the better the petrol the more ignition advance- more power, increased smoothness, better det protection etc..

End of story....I thank you!

So if I stick Super unleaded in next time, will it make a difference? What happens if you don't reset the ECU? What if I reset the ECU, don't notice a difference and go back to 95 octane, do I have to reset ECU again?

So many questions!

I emailed shell and this is the reply i got
Dear Sir or Madam,
Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding Optimax supplies.
Following the recent incident at the Hemel Hempstead Oil Terminal, Shell is in the process of reorganising the current distribution of fuels for sites in the South of England.
To ensure the mainline grades of unleaded and diesel are kept in stock, the resource used for Optimax deliveries has been unitised to support these deliveries. Our distribution contractors are working to get extra resource to aid with mainline deliveries and allow Optimax to be dispatched to sites again. We anticipate that this will take several weeks to get all deliveries back to normal.
Shell appreciates your reliance on Optimax, and would like to thank you for your patience during this difficult period. Please be assured that we are doing everything to get all fuels to service stations.
Yours sincerely,

Matthew Wagster

Esso 97 and 4mls per litre of NF (instead of 3mls) would keep my car happy while this goes on, just add some booster to compensate.

Shell seem to be doing a good job of alienating what must be a very loyal set of customers for a commodity like petrol. No Optimax for miles around here so after a few years of running exclusively on Optimax they are going to force me to try something else!

Give them chance to introduce V-power. They have to stop refining Optimax to refine V-power. So maybe they are just using whats left of Optimax so that V-power transition will be as smooth as possibe.

You won't al lbe moaning then and the temp shortage will be a distant memory when we are all running on standard 100ROn fuel

Get with it

Our local (Buxton) Esso station has had no supreme for 4 weeks and Esso cannot tell them when they will get stocks!!

Having to drive over the Cat and Fiddle to get some optimax now, What a shame !! LOL

Their shortage was before the fire.

If Shell can curtail supplies to loyal customers and fail to give clear communication as to the problem and time scale then I think it is time to consider an alternative and map accordingly.
If they see a big drop in their Optimax market when they come back on line it may bring the price down and at the very least make them think twice before giving us this shabby tratment again.
I am all for an organised boycott.

95 RON with OB will effectively give you the rating of Optimax.

Paul3446 - Your car has a knock sensor and will adjust accordingly.
