If you were using Optimax before just get Esso Supreme (97) [or BP Ultimate or any other 97 Super] and add 1ml/litre of NF. If you ran Optimax plus NF then increase the amount of NF to the Super and watch for Knock Link activity.
No Optimax in Darlington and not expected until into the New Year.
Plenty Optimax in Berwick on Tweed and no knowledge of any problems.
Ditto Jedburgh.
What niggles me is how easily they have decided to drop Optimax and the lack of firm information and explanation. Like others I have been a loyal customer since Optimax became available and also use Shell Unleaded and Deisel. Filling a wagon can be nearly 500 litres depending on the truck and that is often every other day per truck. On top of that there is the shell credit cards.
The WRX Wagon is mapped on the edge with Optimax and NF and I was in the middle of Octane Booster experiments which are goosed now.
I am now going to remap the WRX, probably for Esso and when Optimax is available again I will boycott it. My credit card is going back too. Shell won't notice my lack of custom but the local garage will and it is not their fault.

There's no BP garages either round here either, and the only one I know of is in Middlesbrough, and I'm not sure if they sell Ultimate as the maps on the BP site are not working properly.

Send a covering letter to the managing director of Shell, otherwise some numpty will just throw your card in the bin. As you say it wont do much but it will show them that theyre not caring for their customers.

Went to Didcot today to see my son, was complaining about no Opti in Swindon and he suggested I try the Shell there, all pumps had it, no sign of being short. 3p more expensive than Swindon mind.

I got some from Kent today. My local station went from two pumps supplying optimax about 4 days ago to seemingly full supply today. Strange.

What I suspect that has happened is that because of the Hemel Hempsted fires, there is a lack of fuel available, so Shell is consentrating on producing 95 RON, as most consumers buy this, leaving production of Optimax until fuel stocks are back to normal.
Bit of a Pi55er though, as I only have a quarter of a tank left. Tesco don't sell 99 RON around Darlington, and I've yet to find a BP garage that's selling Ultimate.

Spoke to a couple of stations trying to find some, turns out no problem getting/manufacturing optimax, in fact its sat waiting, problem is they lost alot of tankers at hemmel hemptead so they have put priority on getting normal petrol to stations, can see it being few weeks at least till it arrives at stations again.

Shell have finally come clean and admitted there is a shortage of fuel in parts of the South East and Midlands. According to a news article on 5-Live, it will be a couple of days before they get stocks back to normal (and I'm assuming this means NUL, not Optimax - which will probably wait a lot longer). Total are in the same boat as well.
I went to my local Shell garage yesterday and they only had one NUL pump open and no Optimax. Plenty of Diesel though.
I thought the petrol companies were required by law to have contingency plans in place. If so, it is crap that the loss of 6 tankers causes a shortage. And they have the ***** to say people panic buying are acting irrationally! I hope they get a hefty fine.

Please be aware that there is no shortage of fuel, the problem is with distribution. Also remember these seasonal facts -
Fuel companies always have distribution problems at Christmas. Demand for petrol rockets as the majority of private cars use petrol.
To my knowledge there where no tankers running Christmas day or Boxing day.
Panic buying is definitely happing - at my site on the day of the Buncefield fire (Sunday - normally quiet) my unleaded fuel sales shot up £4k, appx 50% more than normal)
There are two other garages near us with much less storage capacity than mine - I have capacity for 143900 litres, when one or both run out of a grade I notice an increase in sales, disproportionate to the time they will be without fuel.
This didn’t help http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4564030.stm I first looked at this on Tuesday and thought the panic buying would start again – it did and I run out of normal unleaded that night. Got 26000 litres delivered tonight so back to normal, all be it with less in reserve.
There is plenty of diesel about because white van man and his friends are having a break until the 3rd.
Shell as I have been told lost 6 tankers - add this to the loss from the other oil companies and there is the distribution problem.
Hope this clarifies.
I have been told that Optimax will be delivered to us early in the new year.

I didn't say there was a shortage of fuel - I know the problem is distribution. As far as I am concerned, it doesn't matter if Shell have it coming out of their ears - if they can't get it to the forecourt it doesn't do us consumers any good.
At least in my area (High Wycombe) there were problems for at least a week before Xmas (hence the comment about finally coming clean). No Optimax in any of the local garages, and NUL has been gradually drying up.
What annoys me is there was a strong message coming from all the petrol companies and government that Buncefield would not cause any problems in supply - and then we find that the loss of 6 tankers is responsible for a major shortage at the pumps two weeks after the event (and no proactive warning).
What area are you in? Looking at the various responses to this thread it sounds like the shortages at the pumps vary from area to area - with South Bucks definitely one of the worst affected.

Distribution is always a problem at Christmas, buncefield has just quadrupled the problem.
At Christmas our deliveries normally get bumped a day or two, but we normally have the stock to withstand the demand.
If you need a tank of Optimax come see me in Enfield - Officially we have run out

Was chatting the the manager of my local Shell station last night (who incidently has 14000 litres of Optimax ) and he said there was some kind of distribution problem as they were now getting fuel from two other depots.
Optimax is being rationed as they have lost a fair bit of tanker capacity. He also said it might be worth trying Shell owned stations rather than privately owned stations.
