I have driven both the puma and the 106GTI many times, the pug is a superb car, the only thing i think let the pug down over the puma id the brakes.
Apart from that 106 gti is a much more enjoyable car to drive and in standard form it is a rapid car, when my wrx was standard there wasnt a lot of difference when moving through certain speed bands,
It was my g/f's car and she used to boot it
In regard to the VTR suggestion, it feels a lot softer than GTI.
Note* all cars i have described have been in STANDARD form, which IMHO is how you should compare cars

Cookstar...i was talking about the VTS not the VTr as you mentioned.
The VTs is a totally different car to the Vtr and has the same engine , handling, brakes etc as the Pug 106 gti.
Infact when tested the VTs was actualy slightly quicker than the Pug round the Rockingham circuit but in real life they are exactly the same in speed and handling IMO.

In a hot hatch shoot out years ago, the 106 gti barely lost out to the 306 gti6 as hot hatch king. I think If your after a hatch to drive and enjoy I'd do the 106, or if you want something a bit funky and different but not as good to drive then do the puma.
I've never owned a puma but did read some some scare reports a few years back about frequent brake and clutch failures, but I'm sure the guys above who've owned them might refute that.
Good luck, whichever you choose, you'll have fun.
As for me, I still miss my 306 GTI6 - them were ' days!

Never driven a Puma but have a 106gti and its soo chuckable and the lift off oversteer is soo much fun and soo predictable. From 10-90 its very fast and seems to suprise alot of stuff.
Could'nt reccomend one more, standard pads were complete kack but now have some Brembo discs and EBC pads and stops really well now.

No way is the Golf VR6 an 150 mph car, might get to 140 if your lucky (and daft), I nearly bought one after a long line of GTI Golf's expecting it to be amazing, i.e. lots better than the GTI's, I ended up buying another GTI.
4 cylinder everytime for low priced thrills.

I dont think indicated speed is very reliable TBH, I had an indicated 138mph out of my old 205 1.6 GTI, they only do approx 120 max
VR6 is a nice car, but a little pricey to run for a 19 year old IMO.

Hi Dangerous, you might want to have a look at which section this is..... Ok, I'll do it for you!!
This place is called, "Other Marques", which means that we are free to chat about any non-Subaru car we feel like.

Both great drivers cars, but a long as you don't mind a drop in build quality and realiability, then the 106 has the performance in all areas. Its quicker, grips better and usual comes higher up in all the mag tests.
IIRC one of clarkson old vids had a handling test, it included about ten cars from Supercars to cars like the 106 and VR6, might even had the Puma too, anyway the 550 maranello was considered the best, but the 106 came second! Enough said.

I have owned a 106 GTI was well impressed with performance and handling - have to admit the build quality was suspect though - it was the only problem with it.
Cant coment on the other cars as havent driven them -

As i said i had mine at 19 and the only slightly expensive thing was the insurance but even that was reasonable. It never went wrong so it never cost me anything except filters and oil at service time

Whatever, you could have a right laugh in either. Have seen Tiff and Plato in the Puma and Pug respectively having a hoot.
If you're only doing a couple of days a set of uprated pads and some good fluid would see you alright.
Have a look at http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/. Quite a few of the cars discussed, in good nick within price range and many with sensible mods which you'd no doubt end up doing anyway. Having looked myself there's some real crackers for good money
A shorter answer to your question, given your experience, budget and needs, is yes.
Edited to say: thought you were the original poster, sorry.

You can pick an early 98 model up for £2500-3000 now, strip it out, lower and cage it, semi slicks and some engine mods and you have a superb reliable track car.

They would also hump a VR6 in both a straightline and through the twisties although admitedly the VR6 is an interesting choice for other reasons (build quality, image and v6)
Out of the two cars though I'd have to say its a no-brainer. The 106 is faster in a straightline and through the twisties and is more fun - all IMHO.
