What you call "older peoples' drinks" are good because they have stood the test of time. "New" is like NL's modernisation. Not necessarily the best.
I make my own Sloe Gin-hot stuff

Miller Pilsner is my day to day lager, or Stella if i fancy a change.
Peroni Gran Reserva is the Boss of all bottled beers that ive tried to date imo.
Wine I cannot drink at all, except Champange.
Moet, Krug, Dom and Veuve Clicquot are favs.
Spirits i drink are limited to JD and coke and some Glayva with a good cigar

Champagne - Veuve Clicquot (about the only champers I like)
Wine - most things white but mrs likes zinfandel which is a real fruity rose - damn nice stuff.
Beer - Corona n line - cant beat it for refreshment
Cider - Strongbow is nice in the summer. Dont get the whole magners and ice thing
Shorts - Southern Comfort & 7up or Pimms & 7up
Simon.

What it is about ice cold beer - even ice cold water doesn't quench the thirst quite like a cold beer on a hot day!
