Don't know much about eye diseases. I suffer from blepharitis and episcleritis, which I usually get together and both of which I wouldn't wish on anyone. The only advantage (if you can call it that!) is that I no longer have to go to my GP (who can't prescribe the eyedrops anyway) but I can just go straight to any hospital which has an eye unit. Luckily it's only intermittent now and I can sometimes nip it in the bud by rinsing my eyes with copious amounts of salt water. Hope your eye gets better soon.

Wink Eye update

I was back at hospital yesterday and theyre really impressed with how much my eye has improved within the last week, i havnt noticed any differance though! If i really open my eye wide i can just about make out the eye chartand i can see it better through the pin hole, which is the important bit apparantley.

Ive been taken off the Prednisolone eye drop and the Atropene eye drop, which keeps my eye dilated. They said it would remain blurred for up to 2 weeks. These have been replaced with a new eye drop called Remexoline which will take the swelling and redness down.

Im still on the steroids and the calcium drug and will be until sometime in march, I stopped taking the Valganiclour antibiotics because i ran out! Turns out i need them to be taken along side the steroids otherwise my eye will get worse! Im back on them now, i only missed a few days. I had to pay for them all this time though!

Exclamation Snap!

Hi Mark,

I know exactly how you’re feeling mate, the exact same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago over here in Sydney! No sh*t I came out here to study for a year just before New Years Eve.

I woke up about 3 weeks ago with a very red and painful eye, left it a few days then started to worry when it didn't disappear... I went to the doctors who was concerned that it could be herpes zolster as I had a cold sore on my mouth so he sent me to the eye hospital here in Sydney.

They looked at it and couldn't see any sign of the herpes virus (it has a unique pattern in the eye) so they gave me homatropine (3 drops a day) to dilate the bad eye and prednefrin (1 drop every hour) and told me to come back in a week. So spent a miserable week in the flat when it's hot and sunny outside not being able to go anywhere because of the eye.

Went back a week later and they took a load of blood tests and chest x-rays, back x-rays etc and checked the eye, told me it was uvitis and to keep taking the drops. Now having a dilated left eye is a real sh*tter as you know, firstly it looks mad and secondly you can't focus at all making it very hard to judge things. So another week I spent in the flat very depressed...

Went back on Monday and got my test results. One of the tests was for Syphilis and it was negative (phew!) the other was for the HLA-B27 gene that is present for people that have Ankylosing Spondylitis, that came back Positive! (sh*t...) another test came positive for ANA (Antinuclear Antibody) which means I have an autoimmune disease, my body is attacking itself which has causes the eye problem. Nice. I'm 28 years old and I'm in good health and this is the last thing you expect (makes you realise about life)

Anyway good news is they told me to stop the homatropine drops so my pupil isn't dilated anymore but I'm still taking the prednefrin drops, every 2 hours now. I have to go back Monday for more tests, etc. It's a bit of a pain, but what can you do?...

My thoughts are with you mate, let us know how you get on and I'll keep you up to date with my problem, if you're interested? If you wanna chat drop me a private message.

All the best,
Cinders.

Interesting! I had all the chest x rays, hiv tests etc too. They still dont know what the cause was, apart from what theyve told you about a herpes virus, from a cold etc going into the eye and casuing a viral infection. Sounds like a guess to me! Drops 4 times a day now and taking 2 25mg steroids, 2 valganiclour and a calium drug every morning. This will be for another couple of months.

It's a pain isn't it!?... I mean not knowing the exact problem... Did they mention Ankylosing Spondilitus to you?... Mine doesn't look as bad as yours, I was quite shocked when I saw your picture.

A picture of my eye is on this page:

I guess we have to hope it doesn't come back again, it's not very nice at all. It certainly makes you realise how important your sight is!

Going through a similar experience I completely sympathize with you!

Hope it gets better soon mate!

Cinders.

That picture was taken after a swab operation so wasnt as red as that but still very sore. They didnt mention Ankylosing Spondilitus no. 13 specialists, a very thick file and no answers! Im having blood test every week too because of the steroids.

Hope yours gets better too.

oooh that picture of your eye looks so sore

I was really hoping I was going to read that your eye was all better when I saw this thread pop up again.
So sorry to hear you are still suffering with it.
My eyes are watering just thinking about it.
I used to have to have drops when I was little ... not much fun at all and even worse when your pupils are all dilated.

Hope they get to the bottom of it soon and get it back to normal.

Exclamation Eye Update:

I went to the specialist yesterday and they said my eye has improved greatly. It looks normal from the front, but im assured it looks very differant at the back! Whilst i was there i saw the opticians, the first time its being mentioned in the 3 months ive had the problem! I will need glasses to correct the vision in my right eye. It's not entirely clear with a lense but i can see more, albiet a bit blurred, but better than without a lense. Theyre going to reduce my trips to the hospital soon and they said when my eye clears up i can get some glasses prescribed. Im wondering if ill need them if my eye is yet to clear up though!

Default Another Update!

Went back today and I had to the usual eye test, but this time I had to do a field vision test too. I had to look in to a light that was shining in the back of a dome and click a clicker whenever I saw a flashing light, some were bright and some were faint - It sounded like a light saber duel when I clicked lol.

When it came to my eye examination the doctor called in another specialist as she thought the pressure had gone up because of the scar tissue in my eye. The other specialist said the pressure was now double what it was last month, its now 45, I don't know what its measured in. I've been given more tablets to rapidly reduce the pressure and more eye drops. I have to go back tomorrow morning for another examination to check the pressure.

If it doesn't go down they said they would have to operate on my eye by making an incision to allow the pressure to leave.

They said my vision was good but the pressure was a concern.
