And if the mechanical transmission is so good, why do the rally teams develop an electric one then.
Not knowing that just clarifies what bunch of tossers you are. And also while I’m at it, all this talk about lift of over steer, just clarifies that the car is to soft. Yes my cav has it, but with stiffened suspension it’s hardly a big issue.
And also your'll see I’ve been here 5 days, not 5 weeks, and I’ve already ready got you lot thinking about your cars.

This is taken directly from the Subaru of America site..
"In vehicles with the 5-speed manual transmission, the All-Wheel Drive uses a viscous coupling in a center differential inside the transaxle case. It contains a series of opposing discs attached to the front and rear output shafts, surrounded by a type of silicone fluid. In normal operation, power is distributed equally between the front and rear wheels (50/50 power split). Slippage at the front or rear wheels causes a rotational difference between the front and rear discs in the viscous unit, which then shears the fluid.
The shearing action heats the fluid, causing it to thicken. As the fluid thickens, power transfers from the slipping wheels to the wheels with the best traction. When the slippage ceases, all the discs turn at the same speed, restoring the 50/50 power split. The process is quick and unnoticeable to the driver and passengers. "
Notice it clearly states a 50/50 power split....
The only Subarus to my knowledge that do not have a 50/50 split are the models that have the manual centre diff adjustment. Which I don't believe the P1 has.

Jason,
Rally teams use active diffs because different setups suit different drivers on different events. Settings can be changed in seconds on a laptop rather than swapping a diff, this also saves days of testing. Some drivers still like mechanical diffs better, one of the 206 WRC's has them fitted.

Now I thought all the muppet stuff surrounding JasonM might be a little OTT at first, I stand corrected.
Just did a little research.
It looks like standard is 40/60 front/rear.
STI (electronic centre diff) 35/65 front/rear.
My understanding is that a P1 is as standard (I own a P1)
The electronic centre diffs set up the initial bias, but at the limit viscous couplings do the rest.
Surprisingly the favoured torque splitters are Torsen mechanical diffs as they are faster than Viscous couplings. I believe this is because V/C's require a difference in speed between the shafts to move the oil around before they change the torque loading, but a Torsen doesn't.
Torsen diffs are however blindingly expensive, and large.
Still, it works and I like it

Hmm. After a bit if scanning of the specs, I THINK what's going on is:
The split is 50:50, BUT the final drive ratio is different front: rear, therefore modifying the torque characteristics?
Or is that one of them red-herring type things?
(And before someone replies with "but that would mean F & R rotating at different speeess, yes, I know, but I'm just quoting from the specs and presumbably this means there is permanently some slip in the centre diff, ASSUMING all 4 wheels are in rotating contact)
P.S. This is all very interesting, but a) Stil no sign of the original crashee, b) I'm fairly convinced that LOOS is all down to weight transfer combined with engine-braking. Now if only I can re-program my instincts & keep that loud pedal down!

Martin, I don't think I have any case against IM. From what I understand, this 'lift-off oversteer' is only a problem if you are trying to correct a skid. Skidding is not normal, it is when you are going too fast for a turn.

I absolutely agree with Alex. It was my mistake. I was very impressed with my Scoob. The only blame I can give it is that it made me feel like a skilled driver and possibly that lead to overconfidence.
Like Miles, I am glad that I walked away (from the Hospital if not the car!) and that no-one else was involved. I have learnt my lesson, and my current plan is to get an MY01 and do a Wetter the Better course.

I'm confused by your posts. Sometimes it appears that you have a serious point to make, but you keep expressing it in such a way that upsets everyone.
This BBS is for people who have a passion for Subaru cars. Not surprisingly many members get upset when someone like you criticises the subject of their passion. Personally I don't actually care if a modified cavalier handles better than a standard UK Impreza.
I believe that you are capable of making a positive contribution to this BBS if only you could learn to write in a non-offensive manner.
People on this BBS are taking the **** out of you and/or laughing at you. That is not good, as it will probably affect the way you interact with society in general.
I think that I was a bit like you when I was your age. Please take my advice and calm down a bit and try to get on with people.
