We have just brought the Samsung LE32R41BD arrives on the 12th £995 with a good 5 year parts and labour warranty from John Lewis,I know you can buy this cheaper elsewhere from "tammle shish kebab" down the tottenham court road and with the lottery of the wandering credit card details, I went with John Lewis a much safer bet and with a 5 year warranty

Didn't fancy buying it for £869:99 from Reading Warehouses then?

You could have bought me a pint with that saving!!

Colin; in order to be able to work with high definition broadcasts/content a set needs to have an HDMI-input (or component but that wont last...) and a native resolution of at least 720 pixels/lines (for 720p/i which utilises 720 television lines -most sets now have 1366x768 (WXGA); some still have 1280x768). Your sets resolution is 960x540 but even though it has a component-in it doesnt support progressive scan so Im afraid that it isnt able to work with HDTV in any way (not even the rubbish used-in-America 480p).

If the vendors told you that the set was able or equiped to work with HD content in any way; then I hope that the above information is of some use to you.

No - HD Ready means it has to have either a HDMI port or a DVI port with HDCP (resolutions aside). Does yours have a DVI port ? They are basically the same thing but HDMI carries sound too.

Unfortunately, I think so Colin. Because its doesnt support progressive scan and because its native horizontal resolution is below 720 lines it cant support HD content (it can display HD content scaled down to 500-odd lines and interlaced, but that doesnt count as its normal telly standard). The connectivity options cant make up for the sets inability to display what you can send to it. Before you kick-off in the shop Id suggest that you confirm the specification that Ive read whith Sharp, their website or the manual would be a good place to start.

This:-

http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/stor...m=21&sm=2&tm=3

Says that, "This TV is HD Compatible but not HD Ready" .............. if you have been misled in any way .... get it replaced or get a refund!

It is not fit for purpose (that is the purpose you explained to the shop)

Is Samsung still plagued by Build Quality issues??

A few years ago they were level with BUSH, ALBA and AMSTRAD in the quality stakes!

Huxley if you can find a shop where you can walk in and buy the item for the ticketed price, then john lewis will price match and you will still get your five yeaqr warranty. They will even do this after the sale.

The requirement is that it is not an internet only shop and they have it in stock at the marked price. If that is the case, get ringing around then go back to john lewis and ask to be put through to the undersales department.

I think you can do this 28 days from purchase and they will refund you the saving.

Samsung are a highly regarded Korean manufacturer; markedly superior to Lucky Goldstar. Their fixed disks are excellent and their DLP rear projection televisions are superb...

Yes, and that's not some insider information....a quick search on the net at reviews, tech articles, news articles and obviously avforums.com would lead you to a similar conclusion.

amazing how some just THINK and BLURB out their views...

Phillips - certainly the high-end models like the 9986 are very very ......very good....even for crappy analog signals...unfortunately they were twice the price of the samsung...

Mind you, come Apr / May the new range of Phillips will hopefully bring the price of the current ones down...and then I'll buy a Phillips one too.

samsung have come on leaps and bounds, and there is no question now that in terms of lcd they are among the market leaders.

My choice is still plasma.

LCD just hasn't made up the ground it needs to yet, especially in the bigger sizes.

I have recently bought one of the pioneer 6 gen models and the picture is as close as I have ever seen to a crt. It really is THAT good.

I had a look at LCD 4 months ago and at that time the 32" LCDs(samsung / phillips) were far better than Plasma's in picture quality.

Above 32" - you do have a point...however I am sure once the new ranges are launched come spring time, this will be rectified.

My views on our new HD TV. We have the Samsung 32" LCD, which we are very happy with, but we did spend ages setting it all up ok

We run sky most of the time and the colours and the brightness are fine, the only thing that I tend to notice is on some, but not all, very dark screens you can see a bit of a cloud effect, but that's just me trying to find faults with it.

We bought a Samsung HDMI DVD player too. The differance in quality between normal svhs dvd player images and HDMI images are a world apart well worth the £109 (which included a HDMI cable in the box!)

All I have to do now is try the play staion and the laptop on it!!
