In 1986 it cost £1700 an hour to mobilise the SAR helicopter.
Remember you're not just paying for flying time. There's rescue centre co-ordination, mountain rescue/coastguard, paramedics, A&E, police (usually), etc etc. I all adds up.
Plus you also have to add the cost of putting the standby SAR crew on alert because there always has to be a bird ready to go in case something else goes wrong.
OK, so the Police are cheaper because they don't have the DTp obligations we had but the principle is the same.
