Driving at Max Speed...
#31
In response to the original question, I had a MY98 Turbo from new to ca. 70tkm, which I would regularly drive flat out from the south of Germany to the Dutch border which is roughly 750km, i.e. most of the km were done this way. Besides the regular servicing and the occasional oil top up, I performed no additional servicing. The car never missed a beat. This of course is n=1, so YMMV.
IMHO taking your car for the occasional high speed jaunt in Germany will do it no harm. Furthermore I'd like to point out that plenty of cars push out significantly more power than standard, with stock internals, reliably.
Anyway, have fun and be safe.

Ali; you are obviously right, but some people just cant be told. Has anyone used 'its a rally car' to substantiate their argument yet?

Not scooby related, but quite amusing: my first car was a mighty (ahem) 1.3 Escort. Upon driving me back to my house in it, the previous owner decided to show me its top speed capability on the motorway. It got to an indicated 105 (downhill with assistance from the wind) :-) at whch point it sounded and felt like it was going to reduce itself to its component parts.
It never recovered..... It just fell to bits!
Still, saved me the embarassment of driving a beige 1.3 escort for too long! :-)
I think what some pople don't understand, quite apart from the eloquently explained technical explanations from Ali B et al is that top speed means exactly that- top speed- it's the point at which the car is giving you all its got, and is right on the edge of its limits. Holding any road car at its limits for prolonged periods is not mechanically sympathetic and is unnecessary. It's the same with the red line, its the maximum, not a target! :-) Even the handbook says you should not be at critical engine speeds for long periods.
I'll take Subaru's word for the top speed on mine I think! :-)

BTW. I wouldn't really want to drive my Scooby at top speed anyway, apart from the legal implications. Holding a high speed just isn't that exciting, acceleration, deceleration and cornering are what make driving a performance car great!

As Iwan says, if you run at high speeds fit an oil temp and pressure gauge. I fitted both and they probably saved my car when I drove to the south of France about a year and a half ago. I was cruising at a about 135 when the oil temp went through the roof and the pressure started to drop, slowed down to about 120 and the oil temp went back to the normal and the pressure returned. I didn't maintain that though I went into the next services to let it cool properly and to remove the bonnet vents, this seemed to help a bit and let me cruise at about 125 no problem. All in I did 2500 miles on that trip and the car is fine.
I vMaxed it once as well to a GPS indicated 149 and the only problem was a whining noise..................from the passenger seat!
