Rev limit is set to 8250 so top speed is 8250/1000 x 19 = about 156mph, and allowing for loss due to clutch slip, friction, wind etc. 135mph would be about right - gets there quick though! I think v ltd had a final drive of 22mph/1000 rpm = 181mph. RA is race altered though - so can differ a lot between specific cars, not all are the same!

Have a close look at the scan I took ealier from my V5 WRX brochure. The models are at the top of the brochure (I've put red dots next to them)... look at the gear ratio's, they are the same.

Below is a scan from my V6 WRX LTD brochure....

Hopefully now, everyone can shut up about longer 5th gears unless you have a P1 or have had it replaced after being in the UK.

Hands up who owns a Type R and has seen over 150MPH on their speedo and hasnt put a longer 5th gear in their gearbox and isnt just lying ...

<puts hand in the air>

Anyone else?

I have as well! On the autobahn I saw 155mph at about 7800rpm. This was in a standard V4 Type R (on the standard 16 inch wheels). Was still gaining speed at that point too so I'm pretty sure it would have hit the 8,250rpm limiter at an indicated 160mph. But I didn't want to break it so slowed down again. I also filmed it - went from 100-140mph in 5th gear in about 8 secs which I think is pretty impressive!

Before buying the type r I have now, i also test drove a v ltd version - they had different fifth gears - I drove them the same day and they were different. - I know mine is standard and the owner of the v ltd said his car was also standard. Your previous specs only included the stats for the v ltd version - not the type r! As people have said - they are different.

Stange then, that in 5th gear at 80mph my rev counter is showing 4000 rpm... the same as yours no?

Mine is a V5 Type R Ltd, so how does that work then?

I'd save it for the track or drag strip personally

Which means it has a short fifth gear! How many other non type r Subaru's run at this many revs at 80mph - I know my previous one didn't - would be at around 3000 at 80mph. I really do not care anyway.

So will mine - 80 at 4000 = 160 at 8000 - assuming no clutch slip etc... so chances are on a good day, it would do 150+ - would be well into the red though.

Im not calling anyone a liar, i think this thread has become quite funny now. I was messing about with the 196mph, I was just sure that 130 was tops on a v3 type r but maybe im wrong with all this 150mph lunacy

My version 5 has the short final drive as it is not the V limited version and that works out to approx 19 mph for every 1k. When Andy was mappiing it he said to run it up through the gears so I did. He never said to back off so I kept my foot planted into the 8k redline (higher than version 3's 7k) and it was nearly off the clocks. GPS confirmed as 154 and Andy might even have the data logs to prove it if we're ever to bring this matter to a close.

BTW, this "Group N" gearbox thing. Does anyone know that that means? AFAIK it means a non-modded production based box, not a special short ratio one.

it is a "special short ratio one" as you call it, type r is pretty much the closest box ur gonna get on a standard scoob, and dont say RA cos the type r is just as close if not closer!

You're missing my point. Group N refers to the spec of the box, not the ratios.

Group N is showroom class, you're allowed a different ecu and suspension, cage etc but you can't go all Group A on it.

The Type RA and to a lesser extent the Type R were designed to be turned into group N rallycars hence the laughable brakes on some RAs, no leccy windows, crap WRX suspension on early cars etc etc. as Subaru knew that these items would be going in the bin anyway.

The boxes and shafts are designed (alledgedly) to cope with Group N rallying, so are more durable than normal stuff, and are usually shorter as 150+ isn't needed down a 4 foot wide dirt track. Also most had plate diffs in the rear which are much less pleasant than viscous diffs on the road but stronger and quicker acting, and the option to lock the DCCD for gravel/snow etc.

That's the theory anyway.

I have a v4 type R there is no way it would hit 150 unless dropped from a plane
135 sounds about right for my model
does everyone have an urge to buy a new block testing this theory?
this place used to be friendly
no wonder all the good guys deserted it

That's what i thought about mine until i tried FMIC though so it's not as bowel crumblingly worrying.

Get it in 5th at 4125rpm and double the speed for a rough guide
