i dont think 8 pints is unrealistic with heavy training provided you are getting the required salt and nutrient levels too. Allot of heavy weight lifters will drink that much especially,

some books will recommend for people loading up on weight and heavy exercise that you should drink 5-6 litres a day, 6 maybe a bit heavy but then when i think back to when i trained harder (than i do now) a could get through 2 litres of water easy in a workout, so that only leaves 4 over the rest of the day.

I also believe that originally the recommendation for drinking a required amount was to drink so many pints of LIQUID however in previous years, bottled water companies have used it as a marketing ploy and have changed it to drink so many pints of WATER a day.

as an afterthought, people have also expressed concern about drinking too much liquid... a thing to bear in mind is that people dont tend to die after 8 pints of beer in an evening, so i dont think you would after 8 pints of water

That's because beer (alcohol) is a diuretic, so you **** it all out.

I doubt you would drink 8 pints of water just for the fun of it, beer on the other hand

The kidneys of a healthy adult can process fifteen liters of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time.

Context - OP was asking about dogwalking, and with a little progression we got to here: "Remember though, always start any exercise programme slowly, always warm up and stretch everytime before and after, drink lots and lots and lots of water (atleast 8-10pints a day)". Seriously heavy weightlifters yes, but in context - I say No.

yes ok agreed, dont drink that much if your just going to walk the dog... you'll just need to p1ss loads and if you dont get the required vitamins and nutrients, its probably not really good for you...

however i do agree with whoever said about 50-70% heart rate, keep your body guessing and all that business

When I am refereeig I can quite easily go through 2 litres of water or "sports" drinks easily without noticing.

Over 4 games you can up that to nearly 4 especially depending on the heat.

Last year I did a trial Feds game in 40 degree heat which was ridiculous. I drank around 2 litres worth in the one game and didn't go to the toilet afterwards as my body was just sweating it out.

Edit for a question:

I have had the last two months off training and the summer competition due to a back injury and as I was recovering I was involved in a car accident (not my fault ) which worsened my back.
I am now using my home multi gym to build the strength back up into my legs before boosting myself back onto my regular running regime. (Also too lazy to start up running again LOL but I have also been hit with a virus - yeah typical! - so am feeling very tired and sluggish right now).

Despite having time off, in order to get my heart rate up to the desired 140-15o bpm I am still more or less having to run flat out. Am I doing something wrong or is my fitness level higher than I am assuming? Even with my ventolin inhaler which has an effect of increasing my heart rate I am still not seeing a high level.
My recovery rate is good, after a minute my heart rate settles down to 80 (my inhaler sees that it doesn't go lower for a couple of hours after).
The only real time I have made little effort to get my heart rate up was when I didn't bother with my inhaler and that was due to my lungs struggling to take air in and consequently my heart beating faster to get what precious little oxygen there was around to my muscles.
