Tiggs,
I agree that Armstrong is a freak - his VO2 max is in a different league to everyone else.
I agree with you that you can get results with the non-sissy approach, however if you study metabolism it will indicate you will get more efficient results of fat buring below the lactate threshold.
If you are trying to reduce fat then it is the best way.
Non sissy workouts will create great results for sure - you are likely to build more muscle mass and will reduce fat proportion IF you control the diet as well. Most of the fat burning will come from increased muscle mass and increased metabolism after the workout - i.e. once you have crossed back below the lactate threshold.
In terms of Armstrong they developed this approach as after his illness he simply could not cross the lactate threshold as the fatigue was too great and the recovery time unacceptable. By developing this new approach they managed to get him strong enough to perform and as a by product it significantly improved his results. For a system designed for a freak it sure is catching on with a lot of success.
Of course they are simply copying the sissy as it makes the workout regimes easier

but efficient is slow.
if i need to carry 50kg from A - B i could do 5 trips of 10KG or 2 of 25kg or 1 of 50kg.
5 trips would leave me feel fresh but take 5 times longer than one trip which would leave me 8 times more nackered.........so 1 trip is less effeceint - but still faster.
i workout hard and chill out a lot to recover

A sauna will only make you lose water, not fat - perhaps that was OK in this instance, but have a drink afterwards & the weight returns !
If they could create a fat burning sauna then £££kerching££££.

Can someone give me some advice please
For weight loss, which is better - gym, swimming or a combination of the two? At the gym I do around 30 mins treadmill, 15 mins Xtrainer, 30 mins light weights and 10 mins rowing machine. At the pool I swim between 35 - 45 lengths. I prefer the swimming, but is it as effective for weight loss as the gym?
Many thanks!

Don't mind if its bike, rowing machine etc (don't like running !) but I understand there is an ideal bpm rate that you should elevate your heart rate too then train for 20mins ? at a time.
Do you work it out or is there a set bpm for aerobic training for your age ? Plus is the 20 mins mentioned the best - I plan to do 3-4 sessions a week.

if your planning on going to a gym have a word with one of the bods there
the should eb trained to help you
if not then im sure if u search the net you will be able to find something fo use to you.
imo you dont only need to take in to account your age, but also any health difficulties, smoking, drinking etc
all vital facts as in gyms they give you a BPM you should be aiming for but as for me im 18 but have a ehart condition and asthma
think i might be a bit different....
but honestly the net is the best place ill have a scout about when i leave prison...i mean work see if i can find anything for u

Checked my heart-rate last night whilst working out on x-trainer and bike. Heart rate between 157-177.
Had a look around at what some others were doing and they were all around 130.
Tried the 'fat-burn' program on the x-trainer and my target heart-rate was somewhere around 130, and actual was 170+. It tried to adjust to make the workout easier and kept telling me to back off but I felt I would be at walking pace at 130.
