i hope something gets sorted out for the poor people who paid for a subscription, its fecken disgusting if they were still taking payments, and the whole thing was shut down without people even getting one magazine.

Not sure what exactly is public at the moment so I'll say I heard this through a 3rd party and have no idea if it is factual (keeping myself out of trouble !)
I beleve this is what happened to S/mag.
Firstly, a contributor of a technical article falsely claimed it to be his own work. The issue was printed and almost out to distribution before JMB were made aware that the particular article didn't actualy belong to the contributor and it had been copied from another publication.
Attempts were made to buy the article from the real owner but the offer was declined.
This resulted in the loss of a complete issue printed run.
Shortly afterwards Hannah Barbera, the owners of Scooby-Doo allegedly raised a legal action prohibiting the use of the name "scooby" in the title of the publication.
The actual name of the mag was Scooby Magazine. Scoobymag as one word would have been ok but not "Scooby" on its own apparently.
Another issue was printed, ready for distribution at this point but it was illegal to actually issue it.
A new business will always have limited cash for contingencies. If they get hit by two big 'show stoppers' on the trot it can be hard to overcome.
I can only guess at the cost of these two most unfortunate issues.
I can assure you these guys put a hell of an effort into this and certainly are not swaning around in company cars spending your subscription money.
I do know Jon had plans to change the name and relaunch the mag (as mentioned on the website) and indeed this still may be the case, it depends on what you read into the statement published.
I hope it is still a viable business and wish Jon and Dee the best of luck with the recovery/relaunch.

Thanks for that Andy
Maybe that would explain issues 9 & 10 then, as some people have had issue 8, I myself have only had up to issue 7
Since resubscribing, ive changed jobs, and cant back check now my old works email (the one I used for the scooby mag subscriptions) however this was only a recent-ish job change, so i would have recieved any emails up until a few weeks ago

Sounds very unfortunate so cut them some slack.
I wonder who the cretin was with the plageristic tendancies. He has a lot to answer for.
Andy : I have never heard of Hanna Barbera. WTF is she and where does she hang out ? I guess a few people might want to make their views known to her whoever she is. Scooby Bitch / Scoobybitch ?

Up until Andy F's post NO ONE knew anything other than they have ceased publication, and until recently still taking subscriptions
I do hope they sort things out tho, as I really enjoyed the mag, and hope it does make a return

Certainly sounds like a series of unfortunate events, however, they're total disregard for keeping subscribers informed means they wont be getting my sympathy.
Just how hard is it to write a post on a web-forum

It would be most unfortunate if the magazine was grounded by the dishonesty of a contributor (under the alleged circumstances, I'd use the term contributor very lightly) and a highly questionable action by a company as large as HB.
I think people have been way too quick to scream foul play on here. I don't believe for one minute that Jon is sunning himself in some distant land on the subscribers' money. If I recall correctly, he gave up his regular job to produce this magazine and both him and Dee have been working flat out on it since.
I'd imagine they're gutted!
Yes, a one monthly issue may have been a bit ambitious to start with and, yes, communication with subscribers could have been much better at times. However, hindsight is 20:20. I, for one, really enjoyed the magazine when it did turn up and would have been more than happy to put up with a slightly irregular roll out whilst all the teething problems were sorted out.
There was a demand -frequently articulated on here- for a dedicated Scooby magazine and whilst others just bitched about it, Jon took up the challenge and did something about it. It would appear that he's been tripped up by some unfortunate events and that this may be the end of a good read.
That's a damn shame. For us, but especially for Jon and Dee as well.

If, in the event it is true, it is HB's job to enforce their trademarks. If Jon and Co. didn't do a trademark search prior to using the Scooby name, you can't really blame HB. If they don't enforce their trademark, they stand to loose it.
I know what's it's like to run a Magazine, and--actually--a Subaru Magazine to be specific. There are pitfalls at every corner, but communication and customer service are paramount to ANY magazine's success. The fact that this thread even exists is quite the testimonial that those elements are lacking. Hard work and good intent is only half the battle.
Okay, I'm going to go back to lurking now

I stand to be corrected here but
Scoobynet is Scoobynet not Scooby Net
No space !!
Makes a claim alot more difficult if not impossible
A simple renaming of Scooby Magazine
to say Scoobymag should have been sufficent
As I said thats my understanding of the law

To add if Scoobynet had to change its name
Its just a bit of redesign and press a button
If you have already printed X amount of Mags they are destind for the bin
and thats a huge cost

But when you register a limited company do these things not get checked by legal people, not at all having a pop at scooby mag, just feel like these things should have been highlighted a long time ago.
