A friend of my girlfriend's was complaining about people overtaking her on single track roads. Said "there's no need for it, it's dangerous". I pointed out that even if she DID manage to dodder up to 60 in her crappy corsa she'd slow right down for the next corner, and take a year to speed up again or get stuck behind an old fossil - and this is why people like me will overtake. Not necessarily so we can tear-*** off at 100mph.

I later find out that she often drives the whole way to uni (nearly 20 miles) REVISING. FFS and that's not dangerous?????????

Oh also, i find application of brakes when they flash wakes them up.

The other day I was picking my way through a queue of sheep, I could see a large gap between some cars ahead, so off i went. Guy in a jag sees this and tries to close the gap as I come past. I pulled in anyway (nowhere else for me?) and he starts flashing and waving. If he had just stayed calmly where he was there would be no problem. As it was a few hundred yrds up the road he was too busy flashing etc to notice me braking (traffic had slowed a little, so i braked a lot) quickly enough, skidded and went off onto the verge. He kept back a bit after that.

Not as dangerous as leaning over to the passenger side to do her lippy.

Sometimes peoples lights are already on full beam, and when you move back in front, they turn their lights off, which feels as if they have flashed you.

....just a thought.

Less obvious with some cars, but a lot of bigger cars have seperate high and main beams.

Communism 101 - right here in action on your roads everyday - EVERYONE, by the self-assumed moral directive of the 'flashers' or 'sleep-drivers', is reduced to the lowest slowest common denominator.

This is why 'in-car' speed tracking is *literally* a crime against nature and a million years of evolution - All people are NOT Equal - It reduces us all to the level of de-individualised impotent cabbages - forever to spend our days bumbling along sucking wurthers originals and listening to play for today on radio 4...

Where's the bumper sticker that says' I am not a number - I am a free man!'

LOL!

I think it would have the same effect as driving 130mph past your local policestation with a beer swilling redneck leaning out the window shouting obsenities whilst simultaneously letting rip with your 'General Lee' Airhorn

I then see something like the ending of 'The Blues Brothers' coming into play...

I find it tends to be "older" drivers who object to anyone going faster than them. I was out for a drive with my family last summer when I got stuck behind Grandad Speed out for a potter with 3 other grey heads in his Astra. 35 mph along an NSL single carriageway. There were initially no overtaking opportunities, but then a straight opened out. I was a few car lengths behind so dropped into 2nd and booted it My Octavia hit the rev limiter in 2nd just as I passed his open drivers window

This cued horn blowing, main beam headlights and much shaking of fists from most of the occupants of his car . I must have woken them all up

Exactly! I always (well, mostly...) drive without causing problems for other drivers. This means not pulling out in front of people and making them brake, indicating, using the correct lane etc.

I feel that slow drivers cause problems for others, as they force a queue to build.

Now, I have no issue with people driving slower than me (I have an issue with very slow drivers; if they can't handle it they shouldn't be driving at all, but that's another issue). BUT they should f'ing well pull over and let the cars past.

I believe there's even a bit in the highway code about it.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Luckily, I have a fast car (okay, sorry, it's a scooby; one of the slowest cars in the world) and I can burn past people where possible. But, this just means I get stuck behind the next idiot who is doubtless driving even slower!

So, the fool I've overtaken bumbles up behind me probably thinking what a dick I am for rushing when 'slow and sure wins the race'.

What's the answer? I reckon regular driving re-tests, at least once every 5 years.

Driving is an art/skill, not a right.

I get wound up with all the blame pushed on drunk drivers, speeders etc. (I'm not justifying them though, clam down) when there's so many gumbies who can't drive even when fully sober.

And relax...

I give them a long headlamp flash to warn them of my prescence and that I am about to overtake.
Why drive so close though?
Distance = time = opportunity to avoid any problem that may happen.

Overtaking in this country has become anti-social, one journalist wrote that it has become as offensive to some people as waving a shotgun round at a childrens party.
My gripe is when people start accelerating because you are overtaking them!

I remember this happening to me years ago. I had a capri 2.8i. It was a country road winters night. White Sierra 1.8LX doing 35 mph on a long straight deserted A Road. Indicated ,Over took and pulled back in next thing full beam in my mirror. Rear fogs on full beam off, fog lights off, full beam back on. So I slammed on the old anchors got out of the car ran up to the sierra opened the drivers door ready to have words and what was I greeted by?.... Four Old dears on their way to bingo or something. I just laughed shook my head and walked away. Hind sight, sorry to the old dears for scaring the sh*t out of them and count my lucky stars it wasnt some psycho that would happily of got out and obliged my stupidity with a good hiding.

Although these days the only time I get out of my car is to park it or fill it up.

I think you have hit the nail right on the head here. These people are just totaly unaware of their surroundings, tunnel vision of the car bumper in front of them. You've just made them soil their pants

What about the slow @rse drivers that know you want to get past, cos their doing 40-45mph on say a back road. They then insist on placing their car with their drivers side wheels on the other side of the road, just to make the gap too narrow. Only moving back over when another car comes the other way.

I had a major problem with a bloke in the village where my mother lives. was traveling to her house on a complete straight road. He was doing 50 in a Big Merc. I wasn't up his @rse or anything, at a safe distance back. Indicated, Overtook, pulled back in. No problem. Got to my mothers house for this Merc to pull up beside me, giving all kinds of abuse, saying I nearly killed him, driving like a maniac.
Since then I was driving through the Village (at 30mph) while he was walking his dog. Within the hour the Police were at my mothers door wanting to speak to me (I'd left by then) accusing me of speeding through the village. The Blokes a total loser. Fancy phoning the police.

Since then I've been dying for him to be driving behind me one day. 15mph will be the only speed I'll be traveling. If he goes to overtake I'lll sudenly decide to speed up, quickly See how he likes that.

The only thing is though, I think he might work for the Police. I don't know for sure, but I have a feeling. **** him anyway.

I dunno what you lot are worrying about.

I've just come back from India, and you really need to see some of the ways people drive there....

For example, on dual carriageways the left-hand lane out of the two is generally taken up by:
bicycles (often with more than one person on them)
small motorbikes (ditto)
bullock carts
camels
elephants
pedestrians.

Then the right-hand lane out of the two is nearly always used exclusively by trucks and buses, going fairly slowly.

Most of the traffic uses the middle lane out of the two, trying to avoid the slower-moving stuff either side.

Except for the local traffic, which tends to go in the opposite direction because it is often a shorter distance than doing it the 'proper' way.

Generally this works reasonably well, except at night. At night the camels, elephants, bikes, lorries and many of the cars don't have rear lights. Or reflectors. Or front lights come to that. Most cars have lights fitted, but for some reason the owners don't want to put them on. This makes the traffic coming the wrong way on the dual carriageway more interesting. Those people who do have lights know only that they are brightest when on full beam, so dipped beam is also unusual. The lorries without rear reflectors don't have the great big bar across the back either - the back of the load deck is generally about windscreen height, and sticks out about, say, a car length.

So how is this to do with flashing ? Nobody ever seemed to get excited, worried, concerned or put out by the behaviour of anyone else on the road. Nobody drove in a trance either - those ones are presumably all dead by now.

Just as bad in Pakistan.

We came up to a railway crossing with the barriers down. We pulled up on our side of the road behind the first car as you would. Next car sees two cars waiting in the correct lane so pulls up alongside on the wrong side of the road. Meanwhile the same thing is happening on the other side. By the time the barriers opened both sides were blocked solid in both lanes for 200 yards. Took a good 20 minutes to sort itself out. Hysterical if you're not in a rush.

How many of us have seen them dithering inches from the back of an artic lorry for miles upon miles, wasting countless safe overtaking oppertunities, only to pull out full on into the opposite lane almost hitting oncoming traffic instead of just dropping right back and picking the right moment, then when you finally have had enough and you decided 'bugger this I'm overtaking both of em' they see YOU indicate, you come right out on the otherside of the road *before* commencing overtaking ( cos you just KNOW they're going to be an ****) THEN that's when THEY decided it must be safe to overtake and just pull out on you only to bumble along exaclty 3 mph faster the the vehicle they're overtaking.

How funny. I agree totally mate. I think some people must of flashed a bit of leg to get their license.

Is it just because we are in performance cars that we think quicker and operate quicker. And that these mindless efforts behind the wheel causing the problems are just simply falling asleep and not paying attention.

Doesn't matter what you overtake in.
If I'm in our Micra, not the Scoob, and overtake, some are just as bad.
In fact some seem resentful that a little Micra has overtaken them.
The other thing that gets me is that you perform an overtake and that wakes someone up and they then follow you through, often when it's not safe for them to.
Stay alert out there folks, the Zombies are everywhere.

I don't tend to get the flash to be honest. But the other week I went to overtake a guy that had been dwandling along for a good 15 minutes on a nice safe stretch of road only for him to swerve across the road and block me. He did this again about 5 minutes later when I put my indicator on to overtake again (in another safe place I might add). I can only assume he had a real complex about it, wouldn't have minded if he wasn't talking on his phone throughout the whole journey.
