Problem is, the "good stuff" is a pain in the **** to get hold of. It's not a case of going down the motor factors and buying a few bottles. With the exception of Specialist garages that charge a premium for the pleasure. Meaning mail order is the only option.

It is easier to buy Silkolene off Simon (opie) waaaay down south in Cornwall, yet Silkolene/Fuches are only based up the road in Stoke on Trent and nobody round here sells it

For such a company that proudly boasts its oil's superiority, they seems to struggle to find any retailer to sell it for them (present company excepted, of course ). Motul is a similar story too (except for bike oils).

Perhaps I should note that I pay trade price for my oil - so it can make a bit of a difference in cost

I think you will find that they are not stocked widely for a few reasons:-

1. Alongside other Oils they look VERY expensive

2. Most drivers are like me - they don't take notice of bollox talked about Oils, they do as the Manufacturer of their car says.

3. They only come in 4 Litres (another way of ripping you off - why do they do this?)

4. The Motor factors couldn't look the punters in the face, as they fleeced them with this 'Mega-fantastic-super duper Oil' (remember, that they need to sell spark plugs, wipers and batteries to the same people!)

I was under the impression that most specialists wiil be well stocked with at least one of the good quality fully synths mate, usually Motul or Silkolene. I know that several on-line retailers do (apart from Simon). I've no doubt that you pay more for the privilage, but like I said it only costs me £14 extra relative to what 16vmarc said he was paying for Shell Helix.

Ah, that would seem to be the case in the short term, Pete, but the 5p soap will dry your skin out and make you look old in the long term. Not all of us will have accumulated a fortune big enough to buy a twenty-something Ting Tong when we're your age, so we'll have to do a 'Antone de whats-his-face off off Euro trash' and defy the aging process in order to attract the thai brides.

Yes they do, But the local specialists by me really are crooks with prices (presumably because kids with their tuned up cars lap up their BS and don't realise they are being fleeced) . And they won't budge on offering discounts. Mail order is fine and dandy, but you know that they cover the carriage costs somewhere. So it is possible to buy cheaper - if you knew where

Can't use bulk orders direct from Silkolene or Motul, as being such a minority use (i.e. me...unless I start selling it on the side , hmm, now ther's an idea ). So if I want trade prices I'm stuck with whatever I can easily get my hands on.

Aside, the difference in prices on cost/trade/retail is alot more than a few quid in some cases it is over 100% mark-up. So obviously, I buy what I get get hold of at the right price. Some might say but it costs only £25-30 more, but me being a tight git will say that extra £25-30 is enough buy another 4litres of oil!

And imo my useage dictates that the extra cost would be of no real benefit, and if it was, I could go the alternative route of using more the more basic oil and changing it more often (thus relpenishing detergents, maintain acid nutralising properties and a more consistent viscosity grade) - which could be argued is the better approach for engine longevity.

Fair enough!

I'm not trying to convert anyone -just pointing out that, for someone in my position, buying the 'good s*it' only costs nominally more than the 'not so good, but perfectly adequate s*it'!
