FFS some of you are so stupid you can't differentiate the difference between something dieing in the wild where no one is available to help it to a situation where an endagered creature is in the middle of a city and there is the opportunity to do all that is possible to try and save it
There is nothing wrong is doing your best to try and save a creature that is in need of treatment/help.

They don't eat jellyfish - although they'd be ecstatic if we could raise a million squid.

And as for increasing my awareness I am fully aware of whaling, seal culling, drag net fishing etc thanks and fully support those organisations which try to stop such activities.
The most important thing to come from this will be the research that will now be done on this dead whale to learn as much as possible about an endagered species that has very little known about it

Well good on you! I'm sure you would have shown the same level of interest had it been less cute animal, such as a rare trout or endangered jelly fish and no media coverage for the nation to talk about.

Eh? How can you show an interest in something if know one knows about it - ie no media coverage?

What is it with the jellyfish on this thread? Years go by on SN with no-one mentioning the transparent medusa-faced barstards then they get mentioned twice in one thread! Are we being infiltrated by scyphozoa.net?

Yeah I am sure people are going to notice a rare trout or jelly fish floating in the Thames thats so small you'd have to be going over the top of it to see it
I think a 20ft whale is slightly more noticeable and of public interest.
Oh and please tell me what cute has to do with it, a whale is hardly cute and fluffy!

Whatever you say and as ridiculous as it may sound this humble dying Whale, by it's decision to swim up the Thames has somehow managed to connect with the human race...It has touched a lot of peoples hearts (yes not all obviously!)-
t most certainly came here to die and it chose to do so in an environment filled with humans...
You got to admit that's one pretty F*CKING INCREDIBLE STORY and one pretty amazing whale...!

Don't tell me all your interests are soley due to it being in the press or on TV?
I totally agree all the boats yesterday was a disgrace, but that was sorted out today with restrictions imposed and no mass of boats scaring the creature. The fact the press covered it is irrelevant to the outcome, the first person to spread the news was a passenger on a train on a bridge over the Thames who saw it surface. Word soon got around. People in London were gathering long before the press were making it their number one story. Plus Sky confirmed they were not hovering overhead in the Skycopter and proved it today by zooming out from the pictures they were taking and yes they were a hell of a long way away, reported to be 10000 feet up and a mile away so as not to cause distress to the whale.
The fact is this creature was easy to spot due to its size and location and this attracted alot of attention. This is actually a good thing if it has made people more aware of conservation of these creatures.
