I am saying this with no experience of the ring, and don't know whether Clarkson is a good driver or not - I plan to go in the LCR, and plan to beat 10 mins by some way

Don't forget that Clarkson drives cars enthusiastically for a living. Whilst he may not be a racing driver, I would say that his experience would make him a better driver than 90% of us - me included - but I'm getting there

And as for saying it was only a jag diesel - the Ring is a fast circuit and if you are experienced enough to carry speed through the bends where the less experienced will be backing off or even braking, then even a jag diesel should be able to set a decent time - indeed in the hands of Sabine it managed 9.12 on her 1st lap. Put it this way, when I was there last year, one of our group (The Admiral) had a 90bhp Pug 307 diesel hire car (as his EVO had broken down) and he managed 10.00 dead - now he has been there many times and knows his way round very well - sure he would have been under 9.00 in his EVO. And these times were in the wet too.

I'm sure that I wouldn't have beat 10 minutes on that day if I hadn't practiced so much on GT4 though

his track abilities actually are something to b desired. hes good on a airfield. they say, as a estimation, if you stuck a pro driver (such as schumacher) in a focus 1.6 (example), and a average driver in a ferrari f430 with driving aids on, that schumacher would still better the ferrari. thats not proven mind. but id believe it.

Clarkson did pretty well for a first visit. He managed to get within 45 seconds of Sabine in only 2 days. Thats not too shabby bearing in mind she has probably done more laps of the place than anyone alive and used to hold the lap record.

Its not about times anyway its about enjoying it, finding new flat out corners, passing £100,000 cars in your £2K shed and chatting to the owners in the car park after.

Well said Gary - it is really satisfying to overtake much more expensive/ powerful machinery when even after a few laps you know your way round better than they do and you think to yourself - what are you braking for?? Heehee.

When you really get things hooked up its very satisfying........ The most fun I have now is taking people out for passenger laps in the 205. Stuff like shouting ''I will try the next one flat, never done it before'', when I know full well I do it everytime is so much fun

Your telling me winkle ......

One of the funniest moments for me was chatting to Karl in the car park when we saw those prototype Aston drivers get in and head for the barrier. A knowing glance between me and Karl, a grin and we were off......Trouble was we were gone before T13...... no fun

Nah they were busy taking pics so no fun.

The Le-man series race boys were good fun. They turned up in all sorts of rentals when they had finished doing their stuff on the GP circuit. I think Davyboy had a good play with a couple of them. Thumbs up at the end etc......

I'm not sure they were happy being overtaken by a Clio....twice

I always think if you have a 911, fireproof overalls, helmet, gloves, and boots, you'd better not get overtaken by a couple of toursists waving in a Clio

John Felstead released a very good and informative video of driving the Nurburgring.

Maybe worth sending him an email - john.felstead@btinternet.com

Got a cage mate but if you come off at that speed in any car, other than a full race car you're in trouble.

John's is a good video for sure. GT4 is also a good way to learn the orientation of the track BUT and its a big BUT it takes laps on the actual circuit to get used to the elevation changes, bumps, speed of other traffic and coaches

Some people pick it up very quickly, others take longer, either way there is no shame.

Gary
