My engagement ring is platinum too... hence why the white gold ring has been put into retirement

However it is your word against theirs that you weren't told that it will need recoating so I don't fancy your chances. I am sure you will get a free recover but as for anything else . . . .
I dont believe that for one minute, mine's coming up for 3 years old now and has deep scratches on the bottom of it, but there is no "gold" gold under there, and it doesnt need recoating ever.

I only ever have it re-brushed as it goes shiny after a while.

Er - surely if you just carry on wearing them, you'll have gold ones?

Midlife - Taken from your link

[q]When white gold rings are new they are coated with another white metal called Rhodium.[/q]

The white gold is still made from 75% yellow gold underneath and when the rhodium wears away the metal underneath will appear as though it has a yellowish tinge. I guess though the base metals in different rings will be different depending an what the alloy is.

If it is 9k white gold then it will not be as bad as the gold alloy is fairly white ( well grey ) before the Rhodium plating is applied and as such any wear isn't as noticeable , on 18ct gold the alloy is still quite yellow and this will start showing through fairly quickly , yearly replating is nothing unusual and costs about £7
