Interesting as it lays the police open to criticism now, as they have set a precident, in that they have used non witnessed evidence to aid a conviction,
so the next time you have a crime and they have cctv footage, they canot hide behind the not enough evidence, or unclear film, just quote "Crown Vs xx"
Also the old line of we have to "catch them in the act", to nick crims, has now been blown apart,
once again it opens serious issues of what data they are obtaining and using,

Some thoughts...
1. If the MG driver had survived would he have also been jailed and banned from driving?
2. I believe the custodial sentence was 'probably' driven by leaving the scene of an accident.
3. The new pay as you go insurance boxes (that are a bit like trackers) will give speed, time and distance on a journey - and all data is kept. I suspect that Tracker/Trackstar is similar - what right do the police have to use this data?
4. AFAIK I do not believe that the standard ECU would store data that would enable speed to be derived - and aftermarket ECUs with good data handling such as a Pectel it would still have to be derived and so there would be no direct evidence of speed - merely the possibility of knowing the engine speed and deriving which gear was being driven (unless it was a world rally car and the actual gear was being recorded!).

I spent about five or so years racing bikes (New Era at Brands Hatch)......I also ***** mates on good roads (two were coppers). We were belting along some twisties near Charlbury (Oxon). At this time I was in front and threw the bike into a left hander (knee down and feeling god like). I straightend up and glanced in the mirror only to see my mate go straight on througth a hedge and fence....he was in a right mess and ultimately lost his leg.........looking his girlfriend in the eyes at hospital was one of the worst experiences of my life. I felt like a complete c**t.
Please keep the racing to the track.......we still do track days (official racing has stopped as I'm to old now) but obviously not with our friend (he has trouble driving and lost his job with the police).
A lesson harshly learned.

Ultimately it will be the choice of the Sunday driver, driving up premiums of cars electing not to have one.
They will also be the choice of fleets - imagine being able to control the losses of your fleet of white vans by being able to tell how they are being driven?
So, no it will not bring down the insurance company that implements it, however it will bring another chapter of freedom to a close.

2) If you do those kind of speeds on B roads, you might pay with more than your licence.

One factor not yet mentioned was the possibility of road rage...Did the Subaru driver **** the MG driver "with impecable driving record" Off ?.And in the ensuing chase the poorer handling MG and owner were trashed .Perhaps the Scooby owner didnt stop for fear of attack by by what he may have viewed a Nutter!
If I was chased and watched the other driver overcook it I dont know if I would bother to stop considering the violent aftermath of some road rage attacks.

There was a similar incident in glasgow a few years ago, 2 car racing one was an RS Turbo not sure what the other car was but the RS was behind the other car racing on the motorway and the RS lost control and crashed the other driver went back to help but the RS caught fire and he could get the 2 guys out in time and the 2 guys in the RS died the other driver got jailed for 10years and blamed for the crash yet he was the lead car and had no contact with the RS and went back to help

did said driver force mg driver into race??
did police prove max speed done on public road (driven mine on track faster than roads but am i guilty???)
i hate to think that one human being caused the death of another but if y7ou nplay russian roulette do you shoot the winner??? (bad analogy)
didnt know mgf was cabable of commensurate speeds

im sorry to hear of any unecessary deaths but putting all the blame on one driver in the article is wrong unless he rammed him off the rd. he chose to race him after all (not saying racing on public roads i right though).
i must agree with what was said before though, leaving the scene of a accident is so wrong. even if you have to face the consequences of your actions you must stop to try and help anyone who could be hurt. this could save a life.
as for the man who died, no seat belt, driving at speeds of 130+ mph on b roads
impeccable driving record = lucky enough never to have been caught breaking the law, or was this the 1st time in his 69 years that he decided to be that reckless whilst driving a car..

So how close do you have to be to be deemed to have left the scene of an accident? Obvious if directly involved. But with a 500m lead and having rounded the next bend is anyone going to go back if the other car doesn't appear in your mirrors?
Also if someone has just stacked their car and they blame you, rightly or wrongly, you are not likely to be greeted very warmly. Punches thrown on racetracks all the time in this situation.

Think telling your kids not to say anything is a bit of a giveaway that you know you're leaving the scene!!!
Some of the other comments on here regarding the MG and/or driver are shameful. The full facts are not printed yet according to one tosser the guy deserved it for driving an MG.
Quite agree with your comments Bubba.

I meant a more general situation, not this specific case. If the witnesses saw you a half mile before the accident, even if you subsequently turned off, you wouldn't have a leg to stand on

as alas said this statement is a bit of a give away. if you see the accident you should stop no matter what. call the emergency servises if required. give assistance if if needed.
i do hate the fact that the reporter stated that the poor man that died was an impeccable driver when he was breaking as many driving laws as the other driver.
