When I posted it I thought "I just know this is going to be the incorrect term" but I thought "sod it, everyone will know what I mean and not cloud my point with irrelevant detail".
I was basically right.

I know, I know, I have been an idiot ......... why, oh why, didn't I listen to those who sell expensive oil ......................... why didn't I just pay my money to protect my engine
Hopefully, the expensive oil will reverse any damage - I expect to be told that the 'AnusOil' will fix my worn bearings - coating new metal upon the faces and regrinding them to a tighter tolerance than Subaru ever machined to.

Why don't Comma just mark up their oil to £50 and then it'll no longer be a 'cheap' oil that's crap then everyone will trust it
After all, if it's expensive, then it MUST be better than the cheap stuff, surely (even though it's the same stuff).
As with many things, it may or may not be the case that you get what you pay for. On the other hand there's the law of diminishing returns as well. DO NOT be fooled by premium badging and pricing. Look at the stats and specification for the product, after all the price is not always right
Personally, I don't know if this comma stuff is any better or worse than any other oil. However, to find out, I'd want some facts. I don't just look at the brand and price and assume it must be OK because it's more expensive.

Pete,
You have your reply and take it as you will but I put the question you asked to him in your words not mine.
Sorry about the fonts, it's a C&P!
Your car and your money as I've said before.
Cheers

First of all, check that the stuff meets at least API SG spec; API SH,SJ or SL would be preferable.
It is essential to realise that the likes of Comma ‘Semi-Synthetic’ contain very little actual synthetic lubricant, and the few percent that it may contain will be low-cost hydrocracked mineral oil, which can legally be referred to as ‘synthetic’.
There is also the matter of the VI improver polymer that is used to modify the temperature response such that the oil will pass both a low-temp. test at -25C, (SAE 10W) and a 100C test. (SAE 40). Cheaper polymers shear down causing viscosity loss at high temperatures.
Oils of this type are OK for older non-turbocharged cars, but a more heat and shear resistant grade is really required for turbocharged engines, particularly if the engine is used at or around maximum output fairly often.

Is that a yes or no? The last sentence implys that a more heat and shear resistant grade is required. Is the comma, halfords etc. a 'more heat and shear resistant grade' or not? If they are then it looks like he's saying they're OK.
"The 'likes' of" - Does that actually include comma? and all the others mentioned as well such as shell, mobil1 etc.

oilman - So, he's saying that they need fully synthetic then?
Doesn't this contradict what Subaru say is ok? They say using semi is fine.
Regardless, is comma or whatever proven to have a lesser shear resistant grade?

You should be a politician Oilman, not a salesman!!
My question was, and I will repeat it here in as few words as I can to keep it simple ....
"Will using Comma Semi Synthetic or Halfords Oil damage my engine?"
I only require a YES or a NO .........
I shall await your reply ....
I am NOT interested in hydrocrapped this and Anusoil that ... just answer the question, if you don't mind.

Does this mean that the Oil is not, as you state, cheap crappy rubbish??

Pete,
Is it not entirely reasonable that a reputable chemist or whatever John Rowland is (I can't be bother reading through this thread to see if it is mentioned but you seemed willing to trust his opinion) cannot give a 100% cast-iron guarantee as to "WILL THIS OIL DAMAGE MY IMPREZA TURBO ENGINE OR NOT? " ?
His answer seems a sensibly measured one "Oils of this type are OK for older non-turbocharged cars, but a more heat and shear resistant grade is really required for turbocharged engines, particularly if the engine is used at or around maximum output fairly often."
My own reading of that would be that it would be ok, and ok only for a Subaru Turbo ( not a strong positive recommendation ?) - however if I, personally, was considering an oil to buy then this is one that I would skip and I would choose another even if it cost a little more : maybe I, like others am buying into marketing hype but for not much more expense there are a number of "more heat and shear resistant grade" oils available from Opie oils and other suppliers too.
It seems Pete, that you want to buy a cheap oil and then find reason for justifying what you buy as opposed to researching a suitable oil and then identifying particular oils that match up to that.
When you give other people your recommendations in the strongest of terms you should consider that others may choose their oil based on more sensible criteria and not just cost, plus they may use their car in a manner that means that a better/more expensive oil is preferable.

That is all I need ............... I am petrified to use my car now because the COMMA Oil I use has been compared, unfavourably, to the 12 month old fat that Joe the Chippy chucks out of his fryers each spring!!
People are scared into using expensive oil, without rhyme or reason, by some posters on here ....................
We NEED an answer from a TOP Chemist ...... he's apparently the expert and I know nothing!!
We NEED to know whether doing as Subaru state with regards Oil choice will damage our Engines ...... he SHOULD be able to state that it WILL, given his 40 years experience in Engine Oils!! Surely to god!!??
I can state that you should NOT put MOTORWAY reconstituted oil in an Impreza Turbo engine ............... I will state that it WILL damage it. He should be able to say the same with a slightly harder comparison.

Pete, don't shoot the messenger because you don't like the message.
If you don't like it ignore it. At least he can be bothered to reply
Now go and sleep well on your Comma oil as it is fine for your car as you quote every time an oil thread appears as stated by Subaru.
I have no more to say on the subject, it's your car, you can do what you like
Cheers

The COMMA Oil I use will NOT damage my engine .............
Please state here and now whether it WILL or WILL NOT damage my engine!
Also, as you state that the Comma Oil is crap please back-up that statement or admit that you are scaremongering!!
Come on stand up and be properly counted!!!!!
