Check this site and ask questions there. A lot of people who know a lot about MG Rover post on there.
Similar to asking about Subarus on a Subaru Forum. HGF is not the major prob it is made out to be. Search the site (oh and search works on there)

For all those saying the MGF isnt that bad, they are just terrible.
As I said, my sister paid £16k for an MGTF 2-3 years ago brand new, she drives very sedately and had it serviced on the button, but the HG failed at 38k miles.
Plus, the drivers window fell out wnd wouldnt go up/down, the paint came off the rear bumper, the central locking played up, the carpet was coming away all around the drivers footwell, the thing would only run on Goodyear GSD2's, and when her MOT place fitted GSD3's it was classed as "dangerous".
The panel gap was horrendous, and she had the doors lifted twice by Rover, it was just pure EVIL. Compare that to my previous MY94 Mk2 MR2 which had 103k miles on it and never failed in 2 years and it just highlighted the terrible quality.

My girlfreind had an MGF for a while, well not long actually before the handling caught her out and she wiped a post out (car was a write off).
I used to quite enjoy driving it as it's limits were quite low and therefore exploitable, but you have to be pretty quick to catch the back when it goes. When I got out of it I just had to check that no one saw me!!!!
MX5 is supposed to be much better handling and I think it looks better.
I wouldn't put any MGF through a car wash, well not with me in it anyway - don't they all leak??!!!
Rgds

It's basically a sound car if it's been looked after provided that everything that can go wrong, namely the head gasket failures and the hydrogas suspension have been replaced. I think I paid over a grand for the head gasket job on my wife's car and that was a few years ago.
Once you know those two items are sound then it's a cheap and viable proposition which although it doesn't handle anything like as well as MX5, can still provide some fun for the girls as they're mainly interested in the colour and taking the lid off, which it does adequately.

My missus had a 1.8vvc. It went rather well and didnt handle to bad (not as a patch on any MX-5 though). The build quality was pretty bad and even though it only had 28k on it, it suffered all sorts of ailments (not HG though). I was glad to see it go in the end.
Word of warning to your missus though, in the wet, it caught my missus and i out a couple of times.

For 3 grand I'd just be looking at something that would give trouble free running , stick to something Jap and you wont go far wrong.
