Funnily enough we do that, thermostatic rad valves set to frost protection in most rooms. Don't have heating in the kitchen at all. We also have a real fire so burn plenty of wood to increase the CO2 levels and help that global warming along. The sooner we can get it be 20C in the winter the better, that'll massively reduce our need for heating, mind you the air-con in the summer may counter that

One problem with that is there is a prediction that the UK will not benefit from this due to changes in the north atlantic drift. We in the UK may enjoy similar temps to moscow in the winter as be are roughly parallel with them, but they do not benefit from the drift. What was it a few weeks ago -20 or something?

Best way to counter any rises in prices is to buy stocks in oil exploration companies.................

So you probably have children, would you have them grow up telling people they got stuck in the arm or leg of the duvet? (Billy Connoly) Fuel is an important commodity for sure, we lose that then we all die. OK I understand, but lets start taxing those who use frivolous fuel, like cheap air fares for holidays that no one really needs, or make MP's pay their own fuel costs out of the very generous wages that we who you expect to wear arctic clothing in our own homes pay for in taxation. I could mention many more savings before I let make my children play games with the cold breath they breathe out or with the frost on their bedroom window.

That strikes me as along the same lines as the NIMBYS. My kids aren't going cold but those people who use airlines can damn well pay their share.

Taxation doesn't work, otherwise we'd all be using less energy and although too many people whinge about high energy costs, no-one is prepared to make sacrifices to reduce demand and ultimately reduce energy costs. George Bush pretty much summed it up the other week when he announced that 'America is addicted to oil' - well, no **** sherlock but tell us something we don't know. The same prevalent attitudes exist in the UK but who's doing anything about it?

Who's prepared to ensure that their house is properly insulated? Who's prepared to invest in domestic wind turbines? Who's prepared to invest in photo voltaic cells? Who's prepared to buy a domestic CHP unit? Who's prepared to convert their car to LPG or buy an electric vehicle? I mean, you won't even turn the heating down.

No bloody one!

So stop complaining about it until, collectively you are all prepared to make a few sacrifices to reduce your energy consumption or failing that we can all blame the Government. Better still, let's all have a good whinge about the excessive profits those nasty oil companies are making because at the end of the day - it's always someone else's fault.

Imlach

Thanks a bunch !. Just spent 15 mins googling for that damn game I'm quite close to heading over to my parents and digging the BBC out of its tomb in the loft.

There *was* a SimCity for the beeb

http://www.beebgames.com/games.php?company=3&start=81

But I dont think it was that.

Now off to play Strykers Run, Thrust, Repton, Frak and Revs !!

Was it the sentence structure, grammar or simple logic that confused you? If you haven't got any money, then I'd have thought that energy efficiency would have appealed to you given that it saves you money in the long run - not a difficult concept although given your propensity for blaming others instead of taking some responsibility, I can probably understand why you refuse to acknowledge it.

Looks like you're the nimby m8, against anyone who cannot afford your chav holiday to spain twice a year. As I've just been made redundant, chosing between fish fingers and beans for my kids or heating the home is such a choice. **** off muppet.

Err, no. Unlike you, I just don't believe in blaming everyone else for my troubles with half-baked ideas that don't work. You can tax aviation fuel as much as you like and I agree that it's not a bad idea but it won't reduce energy consumption. You have to start that at source i.e your home - for which I've given plenty of examples above. You only have to look at tax rises on fuel over the last few years to understand that it doesn't reduce consumption. Just look at airport taxes which haven't worked given the dramatic rise in passenger levels over the last few years.

It's a shame that you've been made redundant but if you're not prepared to turn the heating down and thereby reduce your costs and can only blame others for your problems, then you're not going to get very far.

Simple, really.

Yes, the name of that game is on the tip of my tongue, but just can't spit it out....

Found the same site as you, and it's not on there....

Revs - I loved Revs. Geoff Crammond was a great programmer to do what he did on the BBC B.

I've been redundant before as well. It's not ideal.

However, if money was that tight such that you couldn't heat your home and feed your children, you'd be selling your PC, ditching your telephone line, and not wasting time on here, but going out to find work....

£10/month saved on a phone line buys a lot of heat.

So don't play the sympathy card too far

Who exactly did I blame? I hold no blame only retorts. I'll tell you what, I'll pm you my address and you can pop over to my gaf. Next I'll sit you next to my kids, 8 months and three years old, and then you can explain your 'save the earth' global point of view to them. Do you think I'm sitting here turning up the gas just for the fun of it? Do you think I'm living in a fecking hot house? Who TF do you think is paying for 'my' fuel costs? As my wife works it's not HMG, you or anyone else. Yeah it's a shame for us. Keep your lame self centered pity, and keep your lame tax free air costs to spain. Hope you enjoy the pool.

I've never played the sympathy card, so dont roll out that crap You wouldnt get far in here anyway. I 'was' saying before people should cut back on heating their homes and wearing extra clothing that a few other areas should be explored. Or do you think cheap air fair is more important than lives? And fwiw my wife needs the internet for her work. You lot really are a class act.

_RIP_ - the point is, the COMMODITY price of gas has tripled in the last year.

That's a 300% rise which the government do not control (the price of gas is a worldwide commodity price).

British Gas are talking about a 25% rise. So it could be far worse.

Agreed that aviation fuel should be taxed, but the reason it's not is that you'd require WORLDWIDE agreement on it, as otherwise the airlines would fill up in countries other than the UK. That's why it isn't feasible on a country by country basis

OK. Let us all know your address so that I can wave at you as I fly over next weekend, safe in the knowlege that I'm not being directly taxed for my flight, whilst you're down there eating fish fingers. You don't seriously feed your children that muck, do you?

Given that the average baby has trouble recognising it's own parents, I don't think it's cognitive skills would be up to discussing energy efficiency, particularly as the gene pool from which it was created doesn't seem overly bright, so I'll leave that discussion to you. Perhaps the three year old might understand more? Why don't you both sit by the computer and educate yourselves and Google something up whilst benefitting from the heat rejection from the cooling fan? You see, another simple energy efficiency. Baste yourselves, whilst learning.

PS. Yes, I will enjoy the pool and hopefully the heat pump will be installed so that I can swim in a warm, heated pool. That'll be free heating by the way.

The point is you were obviously (in smarty pants mode) trying to make out I'm some work shy dodger. So what, you were unemployed and got a job afain, whoopee do. Does that model apply to everyone and at any time? What's your point than? The 'I'm all right now jack' approach only applies when you're all right jack.

Good grief you are such a pedant. Obviously I dont want a crass to$$er like you near my kids, and obviously it was an example I gave. We all eat sea bass every night. Yup you can keep up the semantics for ever more on a BBS, a bit more difficult when your are in the here and now.

Strewth. Can you not tell when someone is taking the ****? Glad to hear about the sea bass - Jamie Oliver's message must finally be getting through! I'll amend my last post and say that I'll be waving at you as I fly overhead whilst you're tucking into your sea bass. Better?

Just out of curiousity, can you explain how taxing aviation fuel will reduce your heating bill? I'm genuinely interested in the thought process here, honest.

Yes of course I can, but it's just not that funny atm. I love my family and put them before all frivolous expenses. I dont drink (much if ever), have given up smoking, have sold all the crap I own, yaddayadda. I guess I was just a bit pissed off today as it's my last day at work. OK I'm not sure aviation tax would do anything much, but you must admit, asking folk to wear extra clothing to save fuel while others jet off virtually tax free in shorts seems socially exclusive and against any 'save the planet' ethos.. I'm sorry but perhaps today is a bad day for me to be posting in here, sympathy card notwithstanding. Keep up the insults, It helps me sleep at night knowing you lot are pi$$ing on me.

Oh, so after working for over 20 years I suddenly need the patronage of a stranger who knows **** all about me. I have no friends or people who can help me? Give me some credit Imlach, thanks, honestly, but I'm not some sad basket case 'job seeekaaa!. Would you like that, eh? ffs, I've told you, get over yourself man. I've had a good career and I'll hopefully find another job without any condescending pity or charity. Thanks anyway, but in my career you’d likely bomb. No offence but I’m afraid that’s how you come across.

No problem Jim. We're all people on here

It's just that you seemed to want to imply you were having difficulty heating your home and feeding your children. Sounds like your life isn't QUITE like that then eh?

Solar has a long way to go before it is truely viable on the domestic market. It's not too bad if you have a couple of square miles of unused desert though.
