But when exactly did I imply that I was having difficulty atm? I'm still drawing a wage, it's just that the future isn’t quite so rosy for my family now. Perhaps my comments were metaphorical, but what’s the difference to my situation right now to what might be just round the corner for many? My comments stand for the foreseeable future.
So, regarding your opinion as amateur “psychologist”, why is my situation not “quite like that then"? Whatever “that” might be.
Trust me, I think I could tell you more about yourself than you know about me.

Anyway, back on topic.....that Great Britain Ltd game is a MUST for those who think being the chancellor is an easy job (no matter which party).
Try it, and see how well you keep inflation etc under control while keeping the electorate happy

Well - I seem to get riots at the drop of a hat

Right! My tuppence worth. I work for a gas company, as a division of a well known oil company. A household name in fact, but not Centrica (né British Gas) and this price rise has been coming for years now. The problem is many fold. As has been partly reported in the media today there are many European governments who still own large parts of their national gas industries, and have been controlling supply delecately in order to keep prices lower for their countries. We, of course, have a deregulated gas industry and as such it isn't a level playing field across Europe. It's difficult to explain, and other's in the press have done so much better than I.
Secondly, I agree that tax free fuel on flights has helped drive up energy costs. Quite simply, it's supply and demand at work. The cost of flying in real terms has fallen enormously over the last 10-15 years, which is partly why Wayne and Waynetta can take 2 holidays a year in Costa el Cheapo when they previously wouldn't have been able to. This extra demand for energy pushes the price up in the global market. Yes, I know, before some smart alec comes on and says about avgas being different to petrol etc etc, but at the of the day it's all part of a similar picture.
Oh and 'Jim'. I hope you land back on your feet soon. I've been there before, although luckily was commitment free at the time. I can't imagine how I'd provide for my family if it happened to me now... All the best!

The environmental impact argument is also hollow, given that the aviation industry only contributes around 3% of global carbon emissions so that is a non-starter and conveniently forgets the beneficial social impact that aviation brings together with god only knows how much revenue from taxation.
I've explained in other posts why we have a supply crunch in the UK, with correspondingly higher gas costs but I think on that occasion others were too busy blaming the Government to bother availing themselves of the facts.
It comes back to the original point I made, that unless we are prepared to reduce our energy consumption then it's pointless blaming everyone/thing else when we are not prepared to do something to limit our consumption either domestically, corporately or something simple such as driving more fuel efficient cars.

"Aviation is the fastest growing contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and will be responsible for a quarter of all UK emissions by 2030. The industry currently enjoys tax breaks and other hidden subsidies worth some £9 billion a year.

So now you're switching your argument to the environment given that you cannot prove how increasing the tax burden on aviation will reduce domestic energy costs?

As for social benefit, I think you are overstating it somewhat. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing the world and experiencing new cultures. But what real "social benefit" is there from going to Prague or Vilnius for a weekend's booze up instead of somewhere closer to home? Much of the increase in air travel has been as a result of the budget airlines cutting the costs and creating more demand.
