Sadly both GTR and GTL have online bugs, GTL is better but seems to require a higher spec server. The one we use at simracing.org.uk copes fine with 24 cars in GTR but struggles at the start of the race with GTL.

GTR2 is based on the same engine as GTL which was an updated version of the same one used in EA F1 series and GTR.

Neither game is as good online as they should be, no user skins for instance without much messing around.

rFactor is based on the same engine as GTL and GTR2 and has been designed for the modding community. The Porsche Carrera Cup mod is very good. And online seems better than either Simbin offering.

Nope. You can only use them in the dashboard to enter text messages. They are not active in games.
ahhh bollox!

I'll be sticking with the PC then.

Incidentally I upgraded to 1 gig of RAM and COD2 online is fine, runs fast, even when loads of smoke (which used to kill it) but on the single player mode it's slow as anything

I've got a nvidia geforce 6200 256 ddr graphics card too, which I'd of hoped would have been up to the job.

What do you think 2 gig of RAM needed?

No, something more powerful than a £20 graphics card IMO. I doubt it would make any difference at all putting 2 gig in.

lol

is that the same? it says supports 256mb

Mine has a different box and says 256mb DDR

I realise it's not very good (in hindsight) but it's the best pc w*nk had to offer (and I couldn't wait to try and get BF2 running

So what do I get then? I don't want to waste a fortune, but I want to be able to play BF2 ok and COD ok

How about a Radeon X1600 pro?? Latest tech, and less than £100!!!

See here

Oh and 2gb would also make a difference, but in your case, the GFX card is the main issue.

Does anyone know if the 360 will support keyboard/mouse for FPS?

I had to sell COD2 recently cause I just can't get used to the joypad controls. PGR3 is where it's at though

I'm sure it will eventually, just not yet.
Imagine the advantage you'd have over joypad people playing online Halo3 etc.

I asked this very question if you read my first post in this thread and was told.. no

I too tried COD2 and it was awful with the joypad.

Microsoft officially stated a while ago that usb keyboards will be supported for text entry etc on the dashboard, but not for playing games. They may change their mind, but they haven't given any indication that they are going to do so...

Rumour is that the official 360 keyboard will be a small device that plugs into the controller. Some spy shots of the propsed gadget...

Not really very good for playing game with....

IIRC there was a 3rd party keyboard/mouse combo introduced for the original Xbox. Not sure how good it was, but I am sure the 360 will get the same treatment.

But I will still be a PC gamer, no matter what I just cannot get used to my favourite genre (FPS) on the consoles. So, yes I will pay a grand a year to feed my habit! Some smoke, others drink, I upgrade my PC a lot

Its highly unlikely that there will ever be an *official* keyboard and mouse combo for the 360.

The whole basis of XBox Live is that its an even playing field. Same console hardware, same game, same controlling devices. The only differing factor should be the player. There can be no unfair advantages.

Won't be long before it will stream divx and xvid, there's bound to be an internet browser too.

The 360 is a great jack of all trades, it's not gonna replace my pc just yet, but it's a great extension to it.

Just seen this

Transcode 360 v1.0 Beta
>> Runtime (you might remember him as the co-founder of XboxMediaCenter(info)) mailed us about Transcode 360, a new tool for Xbox 360 and Windows MediaCenter he released today:

"Designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and the Xbox 360, Transcode 360 aims to broaden the support for a wide range of video media including DivX and XviD." - runtime360.com

The underlying mechanism for transcoding and streaming is much the same as /mceDivX360 however the user-interface is more tightly integrated with Windows Media Center, and generally more robust and easy to use.

The installation is pretty straightforward, it's all automated. If you run into any problems have a quick read through the included manual, the sections on optimization and troubleshooting are well worth reading.

The software runs in the background as an NT service, and with a few tweaks you can even shift the burden of transcoding to a more powerful computer on your home network. Looking forward we have plans to replace Windows Media Encoder with an open-source transcoder that will be a) less CPU intensive b) more compatible with an even wider range of codecs.

The project will be open-sourced under the GPL license once Subversion hosting has been provisioned.

I dont suppose they will replace pcs, but they do replace the need to buy daft graphics cards every year, fanny about with anti aliasing settings, overclocking, worrying about frame rates, 3d mark, card reviews, buying the GT instead of the Ultra, most of the random crashing, direct X etc.

PC's will always be required for ****.

Forgive me if I don't run around the room shouting with excitement. As great as the 360 is, it will never replace a pc. You yourself admit that you need a media center pc to get the most out of it.

My CD and DVD player have been gathering dust since I got the 360, it's good enough to replace both.
If a bit noisy. My normal dvd player is much quieter. I've found that the noise of the 360 detracts too much when trying to watch a movie or listen to a cd.

Won't be long before it will stream divx and xvid, there's bound to be an internet browser too.
So you too can watch dodgy low quality downloaded movies on the tv. Not interested in that. Plus, why bother trying to use inferior browsing technology on the 360 (which doesn't exist yet) when you can just browse on the pc which will have full support for the various web plugins etc out there.

The 360 is a great jack of all trades, it's not gonna replace my pc just yet, but it's a great extension to it.
Nope. It's a great jack of some trades. It's a great machine no doubt, but it just cannot replace a computer, unless all you use your pc for is browsing the internet, watching dodgy downloaded videos and listening to music that is...

The last pc gfx card I bought was in the machine for 4 years before I felt the need to replace it

fanny about with anti aliasing settings, overclocking, worrying about frame rates,
Never had to do that. Never overclocked a pc before, never had problems with frame rates.

most of the random crashing, direct X etc.
Hmmm, so you've never had a console game crash then? What about all those ps1 machines which you had to turn upside down to get them to work, or on the 360 the random crashes which wipe all you save games in COD2 (patch now released btw), or GTA on the PSP which has been known to do the same thing.

That's got nothing to do with the pc. That's just bad programming...

Buy a Mac, a 360 and a HD TV. Elegant in everything they do and about the same money as a top spec PC with all the woes that betide it.

Except the whole point of getting a high-spec pc is to play the game on it that you can't get for consoles. Seeing as you can't get them for the Mac either, that route seems a bit pointless

When they make the games I like playing for the consoles then I will. Until then, I'll stick with my ninja pc for those and use the 360 for everything else thanks

Well I'm not about to ditch my desktop/laptop and start carrying my 360 to work.

All I'm saying is the 360 is a very versatile bit of kit, nowhere did I say it was better than a pc or that it will replace a pc.

The thread poster asked a few questions and I gave him my experiences, no need to get patronising.
