Logical deduction and the fact that turbo cars basically can't give between 80%-100% performance. As enough throttle to give 80% will nearly always give you full boost and as good as damit maximum acceleration.

Unless the STI had well over 400bhp then it was trying and here is why:

Facts we know - the CTR was being driven flat-out AND the sti was closing in slowly.

Against an STI that isn't trying a CTR will pull away comfortably. To only just 'match' a CTR even a PPPd STI would have to utilise 90% of its available power - this is hard to do and pointless. To be pulling a CTR in albeit slowly would be conducive to an STI 'trying' and therefore it was as good as flat out. Even in a PPP'd STI to moderate the throttle on a turbo-charged car to give the 90-95% performance required to slowly crawl in on it would be difficult and seemingly pointless. I accept that it may have been a monster 400bhp STI that was being driven in short sustained 2/3rd throttle 'blasts' to 'keep with traffic' but any other STI was flat out. You always know when someone is trying - maybe the other driver was changing a little earlier through choice or bad driving but his foot was burried based on the facts we know.

RANT OVER <ziiiip>
Here Here Saxo Boy!!!

And for the record he was the one driving close behind me and he was very close prior to pulling onto the motorway. So he was up for it no question!

But its ok you guys can keep on making yourselves feel better by saying he wasnt trying or the scooby wasnt flat out etc etc etc!!

It just makes me laugh at the thought of it!!!!

see , i thought you were a detective , it's sherlock holmes don't you know !! my point is , were you actually there ?? hmm! i thought not . urgo your conclusions are flawed , elementry my dear watson !! the guy in the aformentioned STI might have been changing a cd or having a deep and meaningful conversation on his handsfree with his loved one , basically we don't know what % he was pushing his foot to the floor my lud !! therefore i must insist on lack of evidence the case be thrown out

Ok, I'll borrow my mates CTR, you borrow an 04 sti (PPP if you want). We'll film your feet, your revs, your gearchange and your distance behind me. Your brief is to 'keep' up but with clear evidence of 'not trying'. If you can achieve it I'll sign the V5 for the S2000 over to you........

The simple FACT is that for the duration of time that I was at full throttle the STi also was. Yeah I prob got on the throttle a little bit before him as I initially pulled a couple lengths. After that first couple seconds he didn’t fall back any further and started gaining but only very slowly. Thats evidence enough!!!

Saxo Boy is pretty much bang with his synopsis.

There are quite a few condescending comments from people on here who need to get things in perspective and wake up to the reality of the performance of their cars compared to some others on the road!

I hope they're more of a challenge than the Noble was last year

The fact that he only very slowly closed up to you doesnt surprise me at all especially as you were on the gas first, power to weight ratios are quite close despite the scoobys extra 60 bhp,uk sti about 180 bhp/ton ,ctr about 164 bhp /ton ,so it all makes perfect sense to me and saxo boys comments are pretty accurate imo.

What honda and what scooby? Thats a pretty wide ranging statement

Most scoobys (if not all) will take a CTR over the 1/4er mile. I only just lose out to 275bhp classics and imagine I could match (if I got a 2.0-2.1 60ft time) a non-ppp'd sti. I catch and pass the sub 275bhp scoobys. The problem with the CTR is getting it off the line.....

Always amazes me how these "I raced "X" in my "Y" (add some tarted rice bucket into equation)" type of threads end up as 10 page affairs. Like this one probably will.

And its always 10 pages of the same crap as last time.

For gods sake, pick up a decent car magazine. Somewhere in the back, it tells you what is fast and what isn't. If you are bothered.

And if you are so hung up about a strange bloke pulling a cars length on you in a "race" down a sliproad, then here's another Olly suggestion: Get a bloody life.

LOL

You are missing the point Olly..

What is so funny about these threads is all the protestation from the Subaru drivers

Particularly comments that hot hatches are slow and crap...

Interesting to note that the CTR is faster at the top end than a WRX

That isn't really much of a surprise on a mainly subaru forum though is it? I would expect a similar response from any other forum if you started a similar "Vs" thread.

One thing I have learnt....there is always something on the road that is faster and it isn't always what you would expect!

I find it so funny that everyone instantly has to brag about the fact that they beat a scoob, on a Subaru forum! Big deal, some of us know that the Impreza isn't the fastest car on the road. unless it is wet and twisty etc. etc.

LOL

But this is "other marques"

And therefore you would expect it here.

TBH, I'd say a fair percentage of those posting on the BBS now are ex scooby owners.

having owned and driven both a 275bhp scoob and a ctr there really isnt as much in it as you might think on a dry day , a touch of rain and take the scoob all day long !

I've got a PPP'd WRX (MY05) .... it doesn't feel any quicker than the CTR over 60mph. I had a CTR and it is one quick little motor. I loved it - once you were rolling in the dry. A bit of rain and it spun the front wheels everywhere though which is why I ended up going for 4WD.

Lads,

I can vouch that my current CTR is quicker than my old Scooby with 210bhp after 60mph. In the wet I would prefer the scooby. However in the dry the CTR was faster around corners. I would be surprise if the CTR is faster than a Sti scooby. I always found that my old Scooby wasn't very fast after 90mph (on a private track of course !!) but the CTR get faster with speed and high revs. I would love an STi but the petrol running cost is silly.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers

Gary

That's probably because you don't like it when every time you post on here telling us how wonderful your S2000 and that it's the best thing since sliced bread, someone contradicts you.

Reading these threads is like a traffic accident. You have to read them just for the entertainment value of the people stupid enough to take them seriously.

1. Haven't seen me say anything about 'how wonderful the s2000 is'
2. Haven't seen anyone say anything to the contrary!
3. My first mention of the S2000 was in reference to wagering it - this is because its worth more then my broken 406 V6
4. My second mention of it was in response to a person that said he'd like to 'race' an S2000 at santa pod. There is some relevance to the thread given the similar nature of the power deliver of the S2000 to the CTR
5. What is your beef therefore?

I do particularly like sliced bread, it is afterall convenient. In all honesty though......yeah, I'd say the s2000 is better.

Seems pretty obvious the STi was trying - especially as you got the jump on him for a second or so which will equate to a 10mph or so head start

If the car in front got a jump then this result is completely as expected.

Think about it......2 cars(STi for instance) exactly the same power, exactly the same driver skill. The car infront goes first and gets a head start, even if it's just 0.5-1s of a difference, the car behind will always fall behind 1 car length, 2 whatever. Does it mean the car behind is slower......no!

So, if you were to reverse Derek's situation I'd imagine the STi would of pulled away quite convincingly.

Does anyone have a link of the CTR in Portugal racing the STi top end? I'll have a look about and see if I can find it, very interesting vid.

Agree with SaxoBoy. My workmate has a standard MY04CTR, I have a MY04 WRX STI with TSL 333 (330bhp.) We were travelling back in our own cars in convoy up to Inverness from Glasgow and then back on business. Now, most would think that my car would whip his big time however that simply is not true. Once the cars are running, there is very little in it. We were passing lots of cars/ lorries etc in convoy and I can assure you I was on the rev beeper a few times. Bear in mind mine is modified as well. Cracking car the CTR and although the Scoobies are faster on paper, in reality the difference on the open road is dare I say it 'negligible.' I wonder if my workmate posted a thread on the 'Type R Net' saying a Scooby could not pass him............ Let's face it, we all love our cars and they are all good in their own way!!

[QUOTE=Derek M]I now have a MY04 CTR.

MY04 STi was behind me the other night as we joined motorway I was only able to give it some from about 60mph once we joined to motorway.

Was a short blast but I got an initial run on him and he was only able to start to close the gap pretty slowly. Kinda surprised me a bit, thought he would have been all over my ***

Only mod I have is cat back exhaust![/

do you think he was trying?

how bizarre! i was behind a ctr last week joining the motorway, from about 40 mph, i kept up all the way till 110, and to be honest was a bit gutted that the fastest car in the world couldnt gain on him . and all this in a bugeye wrx with a zorst. wtf is going on with you sti boys? i cant see the point in owning one, reading some of the previous pissy performance quotes from sti owners.

Again, who cares ?? as long as the car puts smile on your face every time you drive it, its the best car ever.

I think my WRX PPP is the best coz its mine and it makes me smile.
