I love how people assume because 300hp car X didn't rip past 200bhp car Y that car X must not have been trying. I mean this in the nicest possible way but have some of you guys actually pitched a performance car against another?? You need a BIG difference in 'paper' stats to achieve a very noticeable difference on the road. In all my cars and in all my encounters only one car has EVER destroyed me and that was when I raced an e46 M3 in my VTS (343bhp vs 130bhp). He utterly dissapeared. I could go race an M3 right now in the S2000 though and he'd crawl away and only open up a gap at well above 100mph yet on paper its a fair bit quicker. Even in my 275bhp scooby I could not reduce the family TDI that was actually trying to this 'dot in the mirror' people go on about. Sure said 150bhp/400billion lbft golf would lose badly but not by as much as you might hope or expect. Similarly I ran with a 360 Modena in the scooby and he didn't fly off like I expected and he was trying - there can be no doubt what that howl meant!
My car is a fair bit (for an n/a) faster than a standard s2k but even against a standard CTR I have to work it into the ground to get past at anything like a reasonable speed and on the one occassion I got a real run with one I had to call up some very large numbers on that digital display to satisfy myself that he was gubbed.
If anything ever comes past you like you are stood still it has double your power as an absolute minimum. This STI was trying - simple as that.

We take a range of cars to Le Mans every year. power range probably 200 to 300+
Minor differences at the "toll booth grandprix" only. slightly bigger differences in acceleration at 100+.

I agree with you on the 360 sound, but even going past you when its doing about 90, it sounds awesome - high pitch wail. Ferrari dealer not far from me so see/hear them regularly.
don't mean to debate the trying thing coz its getting boring.
And the fastest car I've driven was a BMW 530 V8 - awesome. considerably slower than my scoob 0-60 but would catch and pass it easily.
Actually its not the fastest I driven on paper but it felt like it.

Yeah I should qualify my statement. I said to whip someone you need double the power. You could also get away with half the weight Hence why them pesky bikes with food mixer engines are quick

ill 3rd that ,most folks assume another 100 bhp will mean you can simply crush the opposition and its just not like that.
I raced a twin turbo supra up pod once in a car with probably half the power he had .i beat him to half distance and then he only went past me slowly to win by about 3 car lengths.

I think CTRs are one of those cars owners can be a bit too confident about, Sure they are quick but I dont really think an STI would have much trouble with one, maybe the STI driver was on the phone or something

Interesting to note that the CTR is faster at the top end than a WRX

Not that that necessarily is relevant to this situation. I'll go with the "big difference required to make a big difference on the road" quote, plus noting the original "I got a bit of a jump on him" quote. In reasonably quick cars, getting say a 1 second jump on someone could be say 5-10mph faster when the "race" starts from both parties. Unless you're on the gas for quite a while (and therefore getting to silly speeds), to catch that 5-10 disadvantage and then come flying past would require a serious performance advantage - or ideally a fast bike.

You can get 80% overall performance by using pretty much full acceleration in a gear but shifting early. I often use much of the power but change at say 4500-5000rpm, which is probably ~80% or so of full performance: I know my car is a fair bit quicker if I take it to 6500-7000 ish.

i think the key thing is. the sti closed him in, slowly or not i care a little.
you got reigned in whether he was trying or not. so say what you like, but there are no prizes for 2nd.
Oh and for what its worth, as other people have said, save it for the track. IMO

I have done that sort of trick occassionally against cars that were trying on occassions, as I thought it would be quick enough without really going for it. Don't mind admitting that once or twice doing that I've been caught out / surprised by "slower" cars (I don't mean things like CTRs which I know will be reasonably rapid) being faster than expected, and ended up either really going for it or giving up and dropping back depending on the situation.

If u stick to unmodded cars u have to take a hot hatch from the top of the tree and put it against a base model impreza before u get a close call.

5. What is your beef therefore?
I do particularly like sliced bread, it is afterall convenient. In all honesty though......yeah, I'd say the s2000 is better.

I've criticised the S2000 many times on here because, good car that it is it does have some serious flaws but to attempt to compare it with a Scoob which is an altogether different type of car, seems plain daft to me.
However, it is funny to see some of the posts when you realise people are actually serious about the point they are making which as I said earlier, is like watching a traffic accident.

when it seems as if at every opportunity you start extolling the virtues of a S2000. Didn't you do the same when you had a Scoob?
I am a car enthusiast and appreciate most performance vehicles (some more than others). Win/lose means nothing to me I'm only interested in the enjoyment that quick cars can provide. This morning I couldn't come past a 330i bmw exiting a gatso from behind him. This was dissapointing as I thought I would but ultimately enjoyable and no skin of my nose. I didn't hesitate to email my mates and tell them I couldn't pass it - it's not like I'm less of man for not passing it.
