Unless the STI had well over 400bhp then it was trying and here is why:

Facts we know - the CTR was being driven flat-out AND the sti was closing in slowly.

Against an STI that isn't trying a CTR will pull away comfortably. To only just 'match' a CTR even a PPPd STI would have to utilise 90% of its available power - this is hard to do and pointless. To be pulling a CTR in albeit slowly would be conducive to an STI 'trying' and therefore it was as good as flat out. Even in a PPP'd STI to moderate the throttle on a turbo-charged car to give the 90-95% performance required to slowly crawl in on it would be difficult and seemingly pointless. I accept that it may have been a monster 400bhp STI that was being driven in short sustained 2/3rd throttle 'blasts' to 'keep with traffic' but any other STI was flat out. You always know when someone is trying - maybe the other driver was changing a little earlier through choice or bad driving but his foot was burried based on the facts we know.

I'm being quite serious

1. You disagree with what I say but give no reasoned argument to the contrary
2. You don't even give an unreasoned argument!
3. When challenged you resort to making fairly wild assumptions about me based at best on your reading of the majority of my posts or more likely based entirely on my login name which comprises just two words of the English language
4. When challenged on that you resort to taking the authoritive stance speaking to me as if I were your son or a pupil.

<garth>Are you mental?</garth>

Seriously, if you disagree with my post then please offer a constructive and reasoned argument to the contrary that we can debate like civil people. If not stop trolling

I am probably old enough to be your grand father lad, so start showing some respect to your elders. My reaction to your thread for which I replied "utter crap" would have been a response if we were at the bar of my local having this discussion. I do not have to resort to typing furiously to contradict or challenge any statements you make. The statement I did make ("utter crap") was a rapid response knee-jerk reaction to what I thought IN MY OPINION was a thread which did not contain any fact or critical reasoning based upon the initial argument of the thread initiator. I have been driving 51 years so I think I have a better depth of knowledge of the UK road network than anyone on this BBS seeing as I was the founder and owner of a large haulage business. My knowledge of the Subaru brand is also quite exhaustive and I will not allow someone who has just four months of Subaru experience to their name (compared to my 12 years) to critisise the STI which is an overwhelming motorcar and is perfectly capable of being driven 1/10, 2/10's, 3/10's (do I have to go on?) and not look as is he was "trying": there is absolutely no way of knowing whether the driver on your rear end has his foot planted on the floorboards.

Lets give it a rest

Well with my many years of experience of scoobs* and my reasonable experience of the CTR I believe its likely he was trying. But yes, this thread has ran its course.

* Owned one for two years in 3 states of tune; been in John Banks car in about 5 states of tune; been in andy fs original sti ra; been in sg72s 405bhp classic; raced numerous scoobys at crail; etc.

I ran my STi4 against a friends CTR from 20 mph up to over a ton, and I didnt have enough straight to overtake him.

Like Kenny, I have an S2000. Ive owned and tuned a number of classic scoobs and with the exception of my STi5, a CTR would do some damage to an STi, especially the new heavy breed. I dont like the CTR, its horrible to drive and feels flat as a pancake but on the move its pretty rapid.

A new STi scoob is no supercar, something ive learned and dont like to admit A tuned one is a different kettle of fish though...

This is getting boring

The thing people have to realise, is the more power you have, the more you play with other cars. The other driver could have been sitting back for several reasons:

a) he wanted to stay with you to prove his car was as powerful/quick

b) he kept his distance because you are a complete ***** and did not want to risk his car by overtaking

c) he has nothing to prove and doesn't frequent the pub/internet by chatting a load of bullplop

Get back to driving around town looking for sheds to race instead of giving this forum a bad name

PS YES, I am a keyboard warrior.

Mate, I also drive a Civic Type-R. You're chatting rubbish, if you set a proper race up with an STI I cannot see you (CTR) winning. Clearly, he wasn't interested. And I don't blame him.

You crazy boys. Ive got an 02 Sti and I drive it because its a nice car. Fast enough and pleasant to look upon. Who gives a rats *** whether you can or cant beat another car. If that CTR was his pride and joy and your Sti is yours then thats all that matters?

and if you want a race ill put a tenner on my 06 Gsxr 1000
