There also seems to be the issue that some fuels suit certain cars. IIRC WRC technologies (or someone similar if it wasn't them) reckoned that general scoobs run better on optimax, but EVO's run better on ultimate. Personally, my car feels as good and got slightly better dyno figures on straight super unleaded than it did on optimax. Any old SUL (used to use co-ops finest for a bit!) definitely feels better than ultimate. Try it, see how you get on - ultimately (no pun intended ) it's you that has to drive the car and put the fuel in, so go with what works best for you.

I've been using tesco 99 ron for a while in my MY00 modified and remapped to Optimax car.
What i can say is that although i don't get any movement on my knocklink i do get considerably less mpg then i do with optimax. But at 2 or 3 pence less then Optimax it probably cost me the same to run the car.
I have also used octane booster with tesco 99 to great effect.

If i pass a Shell garage i will prefer to fill up with optimax, but the nearest one to me is 16 miles away in Cambridge.

The batley tesco is charing 91.9p at the moment, put in half a tank yesterday, in my car that is mapped for 98 ron and it did pull slightly better than optimax at the top end of the rev range.

Recently had my car mapped on Optimax and we had to pull loads of timing out of the map just before 5000rpm to get clean timing.
2 weeks later I had the car mapped again on tesco 99 and millers octane plus and we managed to get all the timing back in which was clean as a whistle.
The result of this was an extra 30lbs of torque between about 4600rpm and 6000rpm which as you would agree is a massive improvement on the road. Obviously the octane booster has helped achieve this but the original optimax was rubbish
