Yes, I do address the issue with using the phase 2 cranks into the phase 1 blocks. The first generation of ej257 cranks needed only to be checked for center thrust clearance. The cranks actually had the center thrust cut into them from Subaru, the clearance came in between .005-.008". The second generation of ej257 cranks, which carry a different part number, also had the center thrust cut into them, but these needed to be opened up a bit. They usually came in at .002-.004", which is a tad to tight.
I keep the center thrust clearance at about .006-.008". If for any reason the thrust comes in more than that, I will buy an undersize bearing for the thrust and have the center main journal cut/polished to fit.
Out of all the stage 4 blocks I have done, only 1 needed to be adjusted using the first genereration of ej257 cranks. The later version of ej257 cranks have all needed attention.

I would of thought that his reputation would be in tatters, if as you describe he didnt ensure the block was ok before shipping. I dont think he would be in business for long if his blocks were failing within a few hundred miles.

I didn't describe anything that Ron did or didn't do. There is a difference between what I described with the thrust bearing, and a complete failure. You can see the evidence within 100miles, what happens beyond that I don't know. It could be they are fine, seeing as I go to the trouble of having the block machined to take a rear thrust bearing that matches the purpose made position on the crank, it's something I would like to know.

The latest EJ257 cranks DON'T have a centre thrust, just the END thrust. In fact, they've been coming with only the end thrust for some time.
So as Paul says, whilst some of us machine the block to take the correct bearings, some short engines from the US have just had the thrust bearing fitted, with no thrust surface on the crank.
I would strongly suggest that anyone having a stroked EJ22T built, confirms EXACTLY how their engine is being put together, regardless of country !
Mark.

The center thrust surfaces on the crank are polished at the same time the journals are. Zen and Mark are both correct in stating that if run on the "rough" center thrust surface, problems could/will arise.
That being said, I have had customers that have bought stage 4 kits from me, not do anything about the center thrust, and have the engine run quite happily. It's not the proper way to do it though.

just had an email from subaruwrxparts.com that there are no more EJ22Ts available
seems another door has closed on us.
I have however found a supplier in Europe for the same EJ22T (brand new) but they are approx £200 more expensive.

When I e-mailed them last they said they could supply as many as I wanted. Mind you I'm sure this thread has had something to do with their supply being tapped out.
As for second hand values, check out ebay. They go for crazy money which is why I decided on the brand new route.
