Yes, as you guys have pointed out the two are not directly comparable and although I am talking about one against the other I am not comparing them against each other but asking which you would rather have for the money - I have always loved the 22B, but it is not a supercar... the lotus on the other hand is, and is one of the few that you can get for that money and is actually quicker than an impreza (cue the onslaught!). Then again the 22B, being a Subaru is a tough machine that will be happy being pootled around or thrashed and will very rarely let you down on the reliability front...

I have looked at alternative cars that are quick, look nice and have a certain cachet, but for some reason I always seem to come back to the above - I would like to hear any other suggestions though, perhaps there is another option!

Well, if it's a strict choice between the two then it'll be 22b all the way. The Lotus won't be a supercar when it's steaming by the side of the road

And by the same token, neither will the 22B when its sat in the garage waiting for a bespoke part to be re-made

Had my 22b for 6 months daily runner, only garage it saw was a Shell one. How many can say the same for an Esprit In fact over 5 years and owning a typeR ver5, a p1 and a 22b, only had to replace one battery in over 60k miles . Not bad for the 3 Imprezas with supposedly the worst reliability in the range. All decatted without remap too.

If you want some noise you can do what I've done with my Sport 350 ( limited edition V8 ) and that's to take the box off and fit straight thru pipes. Then change the crappy cats for a hi-flow sports cats and believe me it's quite roarcus. I've also got a pair of dump valves as well, to make it sound like a scooby !!

They do have to be well looked after. Servicing is quite high, about £350 for an A service and £500 for a B. That's every 6,000 miles. Then, every 24k miles the cam belt needs changing at £1k. A clucth, which can last anywhere between 10k and 40k is about £1.5k.

The 5th gear V8 thing was most likely made to fail it makes better TV. At the last VMax event, 3 Esprits V8s topped 170. 172, 174 ( me ) and 179 ( a V8-GT with the wastegate actuators disconnected ! ). We all drove home okay after that. Okay, it's not 200mph but 179 is not that slow !
