The only bit of the Pantera that is significantly safer is the engine as obviously the Maserati V8 is far more expensive to rebuild than the small block for in the Pantera. The ZF gearbox and transaxle are the same however and this is a more likely source of problems.
For me the fact it is a Maserati and one of the great forgotten supercars was the deciding factor when deciding which classic supercar to go for.

DW - cracking Pantera! That shot illustrates nicely how loud they look compared to summat a bit more understated like a Bora... those rear wheels are obscenely huge.
Both seem to be very rare now, the Bora more so. Panteras seem to be around £30k for a good one (although there's a lefthooker on pistonheads for £20k)... god knows what you'd pay for a Bora if you ever found one.
£20k.. DT Pantera or A3tdi? Hmm!

[Biggest money pit?? Definately my old Saxo VTS. Gearbox, head gasket, discs and pads front and back, clutch, 3 catalytic convertors, 1 full exhaust and 2 head units!! All that and it was only sold with 60 000 on the clock. Hard 60000 though!! You'd have thought I'd have learnt my lesson with ****ty french cars but no I bought a 106GTI and had nearly as much trouble with that too!!! No more French for me, they just cant take hard driving!!

I dunno, I thought the couple of pugs I had were pretty reliable considering the way I teated them.
Although I did break the diff in the 106 but it was covered under warranty.
Clocked up 15,000 miles in about 8months (just ragging it around) and ended up selling it after landing it a little hard on the rear suspension one day bending the boot floor.

Biggest money pit (excluding the wife!) ....... for the last few years - just cars in general as I haven't settled .....
Before my current cars there were :-
S2000 - owned 1 year and lost £7K !!!
CTR - owned 18 months and lost £4K
BMW 330i owned 10 months and lost £4,750
I now seem happier with an '05 Scooby WRX PPP and a TVR Griffith 500 ...... which is just as well as I have totally run out of money to waste!
Whoever bought the S2000, CTR and 330i got mint cars at my expense - sometime I want to actually be the one who buys a car in that condition rather than the muppet who sells them

my first money pit was a vauxhall nova I bought for £1000 about 7 years ago. It had had an engine conversion in it. Not long after I bought it I blew a hunk out of the head. I had the head replaed but it wasn't running properly.
I then had another engine fitted. a 2.0l 8v cavalier engine, but this had taken in some water and the piston was knackerd so had to come out.
In went engine no 3 which was a 2.0l 16v calibra engine.
Paid £1000 for the car, spent £12,000 over 3 years sold for £1500 !!
The boy who bought it from me sold it for £3000, then the next owner crashed it. Another person bought it and repaired it doing a full rebuilt spending another £12,000 on it. He sold it for £1500 the guy who bought it scrapped it after a few months !
That's a £24k nova !
The next car was my silver wrx. Paid £6k for it, spend another £6k on it, someone crashed into me writing it off.
My current wrx cost me £3500, but I've spent another £4500 on it already since last June.
My other current car is a £2500 mr2 turbo whih is away getting a £10k ferrari 355 conversion

Mine was a K Plate Rover 220 Turbo Coupe. Very low mileage, fsh etc. Was giving it a quick blast and the engine let go. Piston 2 and 3 disintegrated. Decided to get a recon engine from Vega for an arm and a leg. Was running it in (only been back on the road 5 days) so was taking it steady.....poof of smoke at 30 mph and piston 3 is dead again. On inspection, the tip of the spark plug had dropped into the chamber. New piston etc etc. That car could smell cash. I never did get to give it a good thrashing either!

Apart from my current money pit, which is still worth about 70% of what its cost me, i've only lost about £4.5k from cars since 1991
Always been careful what I buy, and generally sell on for near what I paid for them
