I had one, it was my 8th ford and I had only ever had fords up till then. Swore by them. I used it as my road car and also for track days - great car. Then I bought my first scooby 3 years ago and am now on my second. Last month, I bought a 205 GTI for track use and to be honest, it is a FANTASTIC CAR that will in my opinion outhandle the XR2. More importantly given their age, the Pugs do not rust as much. I wish I had one of these when I was younger. Instead, I was convinced that Fords were the dugs baws when they are not really (well they are but so are Pugs!!!) Turn to the dark side mate!!!

If you are still undecided, to answer your post, the engines can become smokey with age (oil valve stem seals) or worse, if not serviced properly. Finding one will be your real problem although I did see a minter in the Autotrader last month for c1300. Us guys never grow up or want good things to disappear. Maybe you should have a look at the Mk2 Golfs instead
We had a few fast Mk 1 Golfs in the championship but after seasons of development on Pug 205s, Suzuki Swifts, Xr2s, Xr3s, Golf GTis, MG Maestros, Talbot Sunbeams, the clear handling victor was the XR2. No one ran a MK 2 golf because they were too heavy and wouldnt have been competitive. It has only been caught in recent years by the 106. I'm not talking about occasionally coming up against one on a b-road, Im talking aout years spent going round every racetrack in the country with them.

The early seasons were all won by XR2s, thet only reason they didnt pick up the silverware later was the fact there wasnt much horsepower to extract from them. Put John Gladman in one and he would put 57 sec laps in round Brands Indy Circuit, awesome.
