and there was me thinking the VXR had done well for itself, competing at this level, keeping up, leading the pack on occasion, being praised by the journo's. But actually they had the wrong people driving the cars and the awd is still miles better

Had me worried there for a bit

Sarcasim aside, the VXR did do well. You wouldnt expect it to be right on the Scoobs or EVO's tail on a track and if giving 100% on the road the VXR may well fall behind slightly but then it will have advantages elsewhere. Nicer cabin, better gearing for long runs, comfier seats etc. The slight differences between the perfromances of the cars probably means more to scoob owners and EVO owners purely for bragging rights but the fact that the VXR could pretty much hold its own is testiment to how good a car it is. The underlying problem for me however is it is still only FWD which is a big compromise for a powerful car IMO. I would be inclined to consider the new Mazda over the VXR. I would never consider the BMW an option in this category TBH it shouldnt really have been in the comparison but then they dont have anything else.

An interloper is matching their every move ........ Incredibly - no scrub that - shockingly, that car has a Vauxhall badge on its nose. The Vectra VXR is splitting the two hardest most out rageous rally wannabes right down the middle and dispite significant horsepower advantages, not to mention the benefit of two extra driven wheels each, there's nothing they can do about it ......

I lead in the VXR and it quickly becomes clear that the Vectra has pace and composure to spare.

through very quick corners the STi looks like its struggling to keep in touch

The Vectra looks suberb from the following Subaru

In terms of raw speed the VXR is far from out classed ........

Love them comments on the Vectra

Yep. It just echoes what myself and others have said. It is good and right up there with the scoob and the EVO. As also stated in EVO mag a lesser power EVO would have been a fairer comparison so if a 260 bhp or 300 bhp one was available things might have been closer. Wonder why they couldnt get a lesser powered ECO?? Were mistsi scared????

Indeed, an awesome car, always been a fan of Vauxhall performance cars, but never thought they would reach the stage where they can produce one than splits an EVO and an STi...... love it.

Yes, it joins an illustrious list of quality autos, Vivas, Victors, Cavaliers etc.

Let's get real - it's a Vauxhall.

What I struggle to understand are the people on here that are so ready to talk down Subaru or are glad that something else is getting close to beating it.

You are really sad and showing that you have no lives. Seriously, get a grip and find a hobby or site that you are actually interested in and provide a positive contribution.

What I struggle to understand is people who don't understand irony

You seem to dismiss the VSR on badge hence your comment "let's get real - it's a vauxhall" as to imply that it can't get over it's image. I was merely pointing out that the image of subaru was always as a farmers car. the impreza turbo only really came out in the last 10 years or so. If you can't get over Vauxhalls image, why should anyone get over Subarus one? complete double standards.

Ultimately, if a car is good, a car is good full stop. The VXR, according to evo at least, is a good car, full stop.

What a absolute *** you are !!!!

No-one is talking down Subaru at all (they should as they are crap, look at the Justy, thats crap, so all Subaru's are - your logic btw) the only reason this thread is here is because there was an STi in the group. Who won or lost is irrelevant, the key here is that so-called crap Vauxhalls (i.e. ******** that think cars are crap due to something released 30 years ago) are now competing with cars seemingly out of their league.

So get your head out of your ****

Up until the impreza turbo came out, only farmers in the UK owned them. Hardly ever saw them on the road, popular on farms though

Vauxhall does well in TOCA doesn't it. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised that they've finally upped their game as much as being surprised that it's taken them so damn long!!

Over to you Ford- the Mondeo ST220 will need to improve!!

Surely the track times show it all. AWD vehicles were miles ahead. Following another car and 'keeping up' is a pretty broad way of measuring performance. Get the stopwatch out, time cars - obvious result. A good few seconds difference (about 5).

The only thing the track times showed was that when you throw caution to the wind and drive absolutley on the edge the Scoob and EVO were quicker. Do you do that on a sunday afternoon jont? I dont think so .....

Its actually the response I was looking for though as everytime the EVO spanks the scoob on the track the comment is that back roads are where its at not the track. A Vauxhall does well in that area and all of a sudden the track means everything .....

Now thats double standards

Fair play Vauxhall, finally getting your act together.

Honestly Gary, when will you tire of baiting Scooby Die hards; being a bit biased isn't specific to Scooby-dom you know! Pop over to the Lancer register and say the same thing and you'll be met with similar responses ranging from "well done VXR" to "it's still a poo car and my car is in a different league"

A newbie on here once remrked that he wondered what would happen if he went over to Porsche and srarted baiting them about a Spec C being able to keep a GT3 honest (which it will acording to EVO- the same mag that conducted the test you refer to, or a P1 being able to keep a Ferarri 550 in its sights..........etc...Wise words for a newbie

5 seconds is a lot, on the edge or not - note also the VXR would have been on the edge on the track also to achieve those times (still 5 secs behind). - which it wouldnt do on the road on a Sunday as you say. The result is the result. I don't think the article made it out as close as you imagine.

By the way pointless going at it with the Evo comments spanking Scoobs on the track. I actually have an Evo VIII - still like Scoobs though.

God. Its relentless baiting and stirring with you aint it. Give it a rest. If your not stirring the **** your blowing off about your bloody exploits on the ring in your pug. Yawn. The VXR seams a good quick car and by EVO Mags own admission isnt far behind the scoob or mitsi so whats the problem. They are all better than your ****box.

Im disapointed i expected a far better come back than that from someone as experienced in the wind up as you are. Seams you can hand it out but cant take it. Lame.

If pointing out double standards as a wind up then hands up, guilty your honour.

Not so very long ago an Astra VXR thread ran for ages discussing the front wheel drive 240bhp car and how it could never be as good as other cars. Front wheel drive just not cutting it. It would appear that front wheel drive isnt so bad after all and that its catching up rather than loosing ground on other methods.

If the Vauxhall had been spanked in the artical there would have been an equally long thread in here talking of the griffin badge being a joke as usual.

If you think that debate is baiting then thats your look out. Some dont rise to it, you do everytime......

Think you will find noone, myself included, has risen to your usual predictable baiting on this thread. From what i can see nearly all comments have confirmed that the VXR does hold its own against the EVO and the Scoob. I can see however that you will persist relentlessly with your stirring rather than offer truly unbiased opinion. No matter how good the VXR appears to be it is, IMO, compromised with only FWD but that is just me others might like limited traction in adverse weather conditions.

Nice try Gary but I hardly think this issue is worthy of serious debate- it's more about harmless banter- your thread on the prevalance of people with 9 points or more is much more worthy of serious discussion.

Besides...

if there is a debate in this issue, it's not that three cars costing comparable amounts perform similarly on the road, it's that Imprezas have been shown to keep up with exotica costing many times their asking price Ferrari F550, Porsche GT3, M3 CSL etc...

And just for you, in a certain edition of Evo, I seem to recall a Clio 180 Trophy not exactly being humiliated by a M6!!

As a way of agreeing I think both the EVO and the scoob are quicker than the new Ferrari round the bedford circuit.
