How will Subaru regain a cult status?
#62
To be honest the only person's opinion a care about reference my Subaru is MINE.
When i get fed up of it i will sell it.
Anyone on here who hates Subaru's so much should really wonder why they are wasting their time on a Subaru website.

I agree it is all over in some ways. The coolest thing back in the 90's atleast to begin with was that nobody quite knew what a Subaru was, just that if they saw one it looked different in a cool/ugly/meancing way depending on point of view and if one came up behind you it was past and gone in the blink of an eye.
The equivalent now would be proton of kia or somebody knocking out an ultra fast, ultra reliable beast which looked really different from the pack and not marketing it very heavily so just a few people in the know knew what it was. I think this is why so many Scoobies are modded because the owners still hanker for having something a bit different to that which the masses drive.
That said....I'm keeping my classic for a good bit longer because I can't for the life of me think what to replace it with? Lots on here have gone for german turbo diesels which I have driven a few of. Can see the appeal but the trouble is not many cars have character now. Just well engineered lumps of metal that cost well over the odds IMHO.

Lifting of the import restrcitions around 2000 was the loss of cult status
When I bought my first turbo in 97 I had to wait 9 months for it !
How long is the wait now ? a week? Loads of old stock 05's around. LOads of second hand models.
Very poor depriciation
All the reasons why I haven't bought another one
Still great fun to drive though I do miss that

This whole waving thing is just absolute bollocks. Look at the way people start crying in the 'Was it you?' forum when someone else doesn't wave back. The whole 'waving at someone because they have a similar car to mine when there are thousand of them on the roads' ceased to be cool years ago and even more so when MINI started encouraging owners to do the same.

This is all toss!!
Nearly everyone who knows me knows exactly what car I drive and most of them ask me about it when I see them.
It's a head turner. No two ways about it.
When I hear it coming being driven by the wife, I look around and still lots of people watch it go by.
You simply do not get this with a Porche 944 or a Audi TT.
It still has cult status and sounds unique.
It is an impressive car because most know exactly what it is and what it can do.
what a bunch of whinging tossers!
Ted.

[QUOTE=Mr Bat]
The current round of visual changes to the impreza seem to put the final nail in the coffin, especially the rear end of it. How can subaru revive its fortunes and make the impreza a serious proposition and not the joke it has become?
easy.... Bring back the classic......

let's face it , the original concept of the Impreza is the best , light weight and purposeful, maybe not the prettiest car in the world but not the worst (p1 and 22b prove that) but as time moves on the uk versions like mine are for sure a watered down version of the original jap RA'S etc and certainly subaru has moved more towards the comfort zone of the mass market, but one thing for sure is, the NICER they make them, the heavier they become, the less appeal they will have to the original market they aimed for that made them succesfull. just a thought anyway !!!!!!!!

Why do you feel the need to come on here and be so negative

one thing that makes all imprezas classics - when you're sat in an office block a couple of storeys above a main road (as I do for most of my life) and a car goes past and without looking you know what it is.
There are only a few things that do that - Harley Davidsons (yes, I know they're not a car, although they are bigger and heavier), Italian exotica, namely Lambos and Ferraris and finally Imprezas.
That exhaust note is pretty much unique and as long as they don't get rid of it, I'll always want one. When I can afford a supercar, I'll get one of them instead, but in the meantime, nothing I can afford beats the sound of an Impreza.
Sermon ends.

#6 "Start of a controversial thread if ever there was one.
Await a torrent of abuse "
I have a MY95 WRX. Not because i couldnt afford newer but down to me liking the car i viewed better than others i looked at £ for £. You will always find that people prefer certain models to others...but i consider all scooby owners to be part of the "family". I personally wouldnt buy a new age but that does not mean they are not a great car.
I think my car has iconic status. I pass 10 other types of car a day that also do....but it is difficult to say what makes them so.

My feelings are that the scoop should go, WR blue should go, gold wheels should go, outrageous spoilers should go (optional if you really feel the need) the engine needs to be a 3 litre turbocharged unit and it should weigh ideally around 1,200-1300kg, optional 2 door and maybe a system where you can turn the 4 wheel drive off, ie on a motorway and just have rear wheel drive? ( no idea if this is practical!!) Flappy paddle gearbox?!
Above all, get a decent designer in (for the interior as well), something understated but menacing would be ideal, who-ever designed the current car should seriously be out of a job.
Any other ideas, or am I talking rubbish !?

My idea of having a subtle looking car with light weight and big power isn’t appealing then? Do you like having a car that shouts race me (although I’m not as fast as I look)

The classic was a good car for the time and money and rightly earned a cult status. Recent examples seem to be indicative of a company running out of ideas, devaluing the car with every new edition (almost annually), yet still using the same chassis from the early 90's. My MY05 does not excite like my MY00 did - they are almost chalk and cheese. This is why other manufacturers have developed cars with similar performance capabilities but way better in almost every other area.
Subaru's are unique in having every model as AWD, and were unique in having a cheap supercar in the 90's. Those days are now gone, and it's difficult to see what the future holds for Subaru. At least Mitsu have shown their (good looking) future with the Evo but Subaru show a beast of a car - beast as in ugly.
I think the bubble burst a while ago for the brand. However, in a good few years Classics will be looked upon as icon's when most have been abused to death, trashed or crashed and the few good ones take the same status as the Cossie, Integrale etc.
I can hardly see people in 2020 pouring over my MY05 WRX saying 'Cor, those lights are something eh?'...
Subaru make some good cars. But what made them special was the Classic Impreza which is very much RIP...

Subaru have missed the boat from a design perspective.
They have a great basis for their cars but have failed to evolve in this style conscious world.
I know its a matter of taste but if you look at the new Civic Type R in TopGear mag it's like comparing a donkey cart to a spaceship.
The Impreza Turbo, as the flagship model in the lineup, is woefully inadequate & the interior is just as dated.

I mean, as far as I can see, the beauty of the Scoob is its sheer vulgarity, that can't be beaten . .All I'm saying you can't tamper with the classics!! End of the story!
P.S
Are you a Fruit bat or a Whiskered Bat???
