I went out for a McDonalds for lunch today, and whilst in the car park eating my big mac a scoob gets a drive through - bass pumping out the car, massive exhaust rumbling.

Three big chavs in the car, 2 with baseball caps on backwards

It then rants it out the McD's car park way too fast, and the tos$er in the passenger seat chucks all the rubbish out the window onto the road

I rarely see a classic with a respectable driver these days

So you wouldn't buy a car because you've seen one in Macdonalds being driven by an idiot? Interesting way to choose a car.

I reckon 90% of Imprezas I see are driven by perfectly normal looking people, 10% are being driven by youngsters wearing baseball bats. I reckon that's pretty representative of any other cars I see being driven around.

Let's face it Saxos are the worst for boy racers, but how many respectable people worry about buying them because of the image? Probably none, they just ignore them.

What a load of toss. Its simple if you like your Scoob keep it, if not go and sell it and buy something else that better suites your tastes. Why on earth people go on about iconic status etc.. is beyond me, who cares its just a car. I am 26 and I have an 02 Sti and I would rather see a bunch of chavs in baseball caps driving badly moded scoobs having fun, than a bunch of sad boring men in mid life crisis driving scoobs, moaning about fuel consumption and starting **** topics like these.

The subaru impreza is a car not a lifestyle choice as some people like to beleive on here and they seem to be the only people moaning, I for one am happy at the momment, however I dont think I will go to any more Scooby meets as I think I may be bored to tears about stories of the good ol days.

Angry? Easy now. You have a point, but let people moan. What else is there? It was a good car, and for me the classic still is, modded or not. It fitted the time with McRea and Burns in the nineties giving the ordinary bloke the performance of a supercar far outside their financial grasp. That made it special, wrc success with local men, and fans could be them.
Look at how the Golf GTi changed, now if ever there was a cult car. It's only now it's getting back it's performance, trouble is there's a car like it on every corner.

What's happening to this site?

Subaru make more great cars today than ever before, it's just nonesense to suggest that the Scooby has become a poor car.

Before I got my Bugeye WRX (I know, what an idiot) I owned normal family saloons. The WRX is in a differnet league to anything I've previously owned, oh and by the way, to the idiot who posted that his 2lt Mondeo is quicker that a WRX, mate that's total rubbish (I've owned a 2lt Mondeo), it's not even close, WRX would leave a Mondeo for dead. No contest! So stop just coming on here and making stuff up for effect

And why do people keep banging on about the weight of the modern Scoob? There is a really good reason why there heavier, it's because there miles safer, I know which car I'd rather be in if i was involved in a crash.

Please if you don't like Scoobs then why in the name of all that holy are you are you on here in the first place?

For all you enthusiasts left on this, ignore the moron brigade and carry on enjoying your ride!!

The scoob-classic or new age- is not the best car in the world , there is no such thing.
I and many others I guess bought one because they like something different and special. My view is that the scoob will always have a strong following, and rightly so because it is a very good package and the engineering is impresive. Just because we see more on the road does not dilute this following in any way.

So Cult status? not sure, a dedicated and passionate following? yes and that's some of the attraction for us petrol heads.

I've never read so much drivel and ill-informed nonsense in my life.

If you don't like scoobs then you really shouldn't be here putting a downer on them for everyone else. Plenty of other cars out there.

As for being cult status, todays equivalent being a performance Daewoo etc and not having heard of Subaru, they have had a long history before then and it was usually with the "cool" people. The Leone was widely used as a car/RV vehicle for people driving to Ski fields in the US and NZ.

And the first rallies Subaru won (WRC) were in a Legacy, not an Impreza.

And those that say they have no future are equally wrong, I would guess that they make more money from their Legacy/Outback range and that the forthcoming Tribeca will bring even greater financial success.

LOL
Some people are spouting total sh*te.
No we wont ever go back to the classic (though this isnt the above ) because the car isnt as good as the modern version, and you dont sell people junk when they want quality, fact.
Loss of the scooby burble.... thank god IMHO, you lot (who want more power and want to keep the burble) are the ones that say "the evo's getting more powerful but the scoob aint", well actually they are, but you have to go equal length to gain the power, so there you have it, and after 2 years of no burble, I dont miss it one bit, actually after about 2 days I didnt miss it one bit but to make your car sound like it has a burble you have to change your entire exhaust, defeats the object to start with (wheres Pete lewis? )
Have Subaru lost the plot? or is it the customer who cannot advance forward due to the blinkers they have on?
Well it aint Subaru thats lost anything, its those blinkered people who dont know what they are talking about and saying that, I pretty much converted someone to a twin scroll scoob yesterday, even though he had a classic and likes the burble, and even though the power is very linear (which some owners seem to think is slower ) and when the new PPP is out, lots of people will complain that the car is slower (no just the power is delivered MUCH better by people who know what they are doing ) people will still complain.
Basically, if you dont like what subaru are doing, go buy a ford fiesta, shove a 2ltr zetaccy engine in there and shove a HUUUUUGH turbo on it, welcome to the world of chav

Default classics...

Well well...I have owned my Sti for less than 24 hours, and I read this. VERY interesting how people guage progress / decide when a company has lost the plot.

I used to own a mark 2 honda crx, which was a wonderful little car, 16v rather than vtec, and possiby the most fun car I have ever had. Problem was that Honda wouldn't stand still either. The new Civic Type R was in top gear magazine yesterday, and it looks like a spaceship.. having test drove the previous type R if its anything like that one, I'm sure it will sell well. I hated the new civic to drive, as it was everything that my "classic" crx wasn't... It stuck to the road, quiet, safe, sturdy etc. The crx owners boards were full of guys wishing they would re make the car, and get back to how things used to be. Truth is with all the regualtions and new ways of constructing cars, euro ncap, emissions and all that, we can never go back to mass producing the cars we drove in the 80's and nineties just to please those that can't let go. (which isnt a dig by the way, as I WOULD buy a remade crx)

I have bought an 05 shape sti, and admit that the older classic scooby was a pretty car, and no doubt with the mods you guys can do, would destroy my new stock sti on a road or a track.

Thing is, people are buying them, by the bucketfull, and subaru are there to sell cars. If its a lifestyle thing, like I used to be with the honda, then stick with the retro classics and I will happily wave at you and any other scooby owner that takes the time to acknowldge you.

people buy cars for there own reasons, and I'm not going to knock anyone for that.

I think the loss of the burble is a damn shame; there are some things I don't want to give up for a few extra bhp and the burble is one of them: it's a signature of the car;it makes it unique; it attracts admiring glances and interest in the car. Most importantly, it gives the car character. Removing the burble is one more step in making the car just another jap rice rocket, lots of ability and performance, but no soul. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound of the JDMs at full chat, very WRC, but they just don't sound as good at low revs and it's not the kind of noise that'll turn heads when not pressing on.

Also, I don't think its true that you have to have equal length headers if you want extra power, in fact I think some of the top tunders are favouring the unequal length ones.....I'm afraid I don't know why, but I'm guessing that it's not cause of the sound!

Think its one of the reasons you dont hear a burble from a newer type Porsche 6cyl engines as they are all equal length though i do prefer the sound of the new JDM over the burble, but most people shove huge exhausts on to keep the burble of the scoob, which also defeats the object, does no one remember physics at school? "sound=energy" so if your using energy on sound where are you loosing it?
Also my torque figures speak for themselves 356lbs, some "tuned" STi's were not even getting near that but you also get more turbo "whistle" with the new age JDM twin scroll turbos and the sound does grow on you but you dont just buy a car for the sound, otherwise we would all be driving round in 30 year old vw beetles

LOL I hear ya mate I think I do genuinely prefer the burble, but each to their own. I don't have a particularly loud system on mine, as that'll attract more bad attention than good and I'm also happy to trade a few bhp for my prefered sound, but its certainly not the only reason I got the car Your figures are very impressive, even a lardy new age will fly with that torque! . At the end of the day everyone has to decide what suits them best, as long as everyone is happy, that's all that matters!
