I love the RS6, however went for an S4 Avant - not quite RS territory, but MUCH more refined than the Scoob, and more powerful (IMHO) - 265bhp/299 lbft.......

As has been stated - a great compromise for the family man. Only played with one, and he wasn't playing (probably for the very same reasons stated in this topic), but when he went, he went

Amazing.

Great Thread, having owned 4 wrx's and 1 P1, and having driven a couple of WR1's with the intention of purchasing.

I bought an RS6, I cant imagine there are many cars that will throw you down the road with such force, it is awesome, I went for the saloon, which is lighter and faster than the estate. (a little)

I love RS6's, M5's, etc but of late I've started to question their logic a little. The cost a lot of money and depreciation on these sorts of vehicles can be very high - albeit not initially! For example imagine how you'd be feeling if 3 years ago you'd shelled out for a fully speced up e39 M5!!! Then there is the running costs which proportionally are in keeping with the purchase price. Now this is all very well if you have money to burn but if you are looking for a vehicle solution the M5/RS6 type of solution is probably better served by two cars and at a fraction of the cost over the course of say 3 years ownership. For example take Edcases car:

£32k, no idea if that's a good price but we'll go with it

It's a lovely car for the money but you could also get this for £14k and this for £17k

The 530d gives you the comforts, the easy motorway crusing, the space and reasonable running costs, etc whilst the EVO gives you all the thrills and spills (and more of them than an RS6) and with £1000 it'll push 400bhp and challenge the RS in a straight-line. It's in view of this that I personally find these super-saloons a little hard to justify as a new or even a second hand purchase because IMHO you are paying for the fact that they cover so many bases (i.e. near super-car fast, practical, comfortable, good image, toys, reliable, etc, etc)

Yes, but they cover them all at the same time.

Say you have a commute involving a motorway part, and some fun driving part - the M5 can do both very well indeed.

Not saying a 530d can't do the fun part, but not to the same level as an M5.

That's a fair point I grant you My commute is mainly motorway but there are some country roads in there as well and I really HATE having to do it in the Fiesta but I make that compromise so that the S2000 isnt' wasted on the majority of the commute which is the motorway stuff. An uber-saloon ticks the boxes as you say but my point is the financial penalty for that privillage. Hacking around in a 530d over those country roads would be quite acceptable when I know I have the EVO to take out after tea time

I have liked my 530D but am considering changing to an RS4 this week as the weather has turned and the 5 is tricky in the poor conditions, I sold my wagon toy and am missing the 4wd rush, the S8 is just too big to thrash around.

Oh yes - ha ha.

One come racing up behind me on the autobahn 'ahem'- i pulled over in case it was the old bill, anyway he was alongside me and he looked across and we both booted it.

Now my car is pushing 280bhp in a classic so its quite quick but **** me this car was in a different leaque, he pulled away up to about 130-140 but then he seemed to get an extra wind and just hit warp drive, god knows how fast he hit, but i swear it just f**ked off so fast i just couldn't get my head around it. within 30 seconds he was gone.

Thanks for the reply's Terminator and NS04, the only deal I was looking at is for a customers RS4 its a modded car that is in the same price range as my BMW. I was going to buy a Skyline for a toy and this customer had owned one before so I spoke to him about it and he mentioned that he might be up for a px on my oilburner.
I did not want to spend so much on a toy tho.(we never do do we!!!).
Thanks anyway.

What do we think?
