ok ur boost solenoid might be knackered causing ur boost to spike u can get a new boost solenoid or u can get a bleed valve when the garage fits it they will set it to 10 psi then if car wants to go above 10 it will vent excess boost safeguarding ur engine to me it sounds as if ur boost solenoid is broken causing car to spike u could try cleaning it

put optimax in ur car then get car into about 3rd and try and see how high u can get the boost on the gauge if it gets to just above ten and dies down u will see the needle drop then that is the ecu cutting boost to protect engine

might be because of all the power mine is above standard to thats what caused the ecu fault
if u have changesd the coils and plugs
the only things it can be are the fuel, the boost solenoid or the ecu then u will see what it can really do

u dont have to get same type of ecu u can buy a programmeable one u can set it to what ever u want. u can buy octane boost from halfords or such like it increase the octane level optimax is 98 octane can increase it to around 100 that is what they run on in japan so the ecu is programmed to run 100 ron so when u run lower it doesnt like it

wannascoobydoo, please use the search function and look for threads about octane fuel ratings, imports and detonation. It is really important that you understand the importance of what octane fuel you use with imports (especially of this age) because quite simply you can destroy your engine very quickly if you get it wrong. I am trying to alarm you because it could be that serious and I would prefer a new Scooby owner to not have to face buying a new engine within a couple of weeks of buying their new car.

Basically your car was designed to run in Japan on 100 RON (Research Octane Number) fuel. UK fuel has a lower octane rating. Unless your ECU (Engine Control Unit) has been mapped for UK fuel, you risk detonation and serious damage to your engine.

What history do you have about the car? What modifications have been made to the engine?

The safest thing for you to do right now if to use a super unleaded fuel, Optimax being most preferred, add octane booster to every tank of fuel and do not drive it hard. Keep the revs down. I recommend you find a respected Subaru tuner and take your car along to them so you can find out in the first instance exactly what you have and what state of tune it's in. If any modifications then need to be made to make it run safe (e.g. mapping to either UK regular fuel or Super Unleaded), they can discuss the options with you and can make those changes.
