The best selling TV's in the states are the rear-projection DLP and LCD sets. They have been sold with in-built HD tuners for nearly three years. A 50" set can be had for around £800 at todays exchange rate.
That's small change though, home cinema magazine carried a usa article which stated over 1 million Americans had spent over $25000 dollars each on AV-Gear in 2005. In 2006 that figure is expected to rise which is why Sony are to push their SRD TV's upto 1080P early this year.

The biggest problem in the USA is the lack of programmes recorded in HD even though the channels have the bandwith to broadcast in HD.

Cheers
Lee

Isn't that the same problem here? When can we be sure that 50% of broadcast TV is in HD?

We may be better off as far as the BBC and ITV recorded stuff goes as they have been recording most premium shows in HD for some time as they can sell HD stuff at a premuim to the worldwide HD markets. But AFAIK the beeb and ITV have not yet signed up to broadcast HD on SKY although there are rumours that the world cup may be used to launch BBC-HD on sky.
The premium US shows will also be available in HD but most of the Sky channels will be SD for some time.

The BBC and ITV will not have the bandwith for HD on digital terrestrial broadcasts until some analogue broadcasts are discontinued.

Cheers

Never mind £10 on a sub - think £20k on a VTR to record the bloody stuff in a studio! The HD premium given on TV production budgets is negligible really so there is no way I'd pay more than 15% on a Sky sub [if that...] and that only proportional to the percentage of broadcasted HD output too

Lee - you may know - what's the bitrate and compression ratio on current sky compared to the same for Sky HD? Fed up with pictures that fall over once the camera pans or the lighting director pushes a 'go' button on a moving lamp. Picture turns to lego on these big sets of ours...

I see Telewest have announced their HDTV service - http://tech.monstersandcritics.com/n..._across_the_UK

Sky HDTV won't be available until at least their CRM system is in place (supposed to go live end of this month).

I'm such a hypocrite - SKY e-mailed me offering the box for £299 and to relieve me of an EXTRA £10 a month for the [minimal] HD privilige. I think I hesitated for 4" before clicking the 'ohh go one then' button. Disgusted with myself for being fleeced so much - and that just after being on a 1 day HD course with the arch geekmeister John Watkinson [here's one of his novels http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/024080578X/qid=1143751518/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/203-9254595-8742366]

Incidentally he reckons its all mostly pants without raising the frame rate to about 75Hz to give temporal motion a chance of being reproduced . Its not all about 'definition' you know or Sony camcorders pretending to be HD based on number of lines they have but bragging only 8 bits of quantisation depth. Off to grow a beard and buy a jumper
