However, I agree, cranking it seems a bit pointless as you don't have the oil wedge to lift the journal from the shell.

i.e how little oil would have to be in there for the pick up pipe to miss the oil causing a loss of pressure/oil flow?
But as sson as you start driving you'll get problems with oil surge and high oil temps (less oil = less cooling capacity).

They remove the sensor to try and prime the system without the loads on the bearings of a fireing engine (NO, not a fire engine ), but I can't see this is significant as the engine oilways are just as full/empty of oil after an oil change as it is after its sat on your drive for an hour I think.

Damn those cars need a 6th gear...

my oil change went as follows (95 wrx)
1. remove sump bolt
2. remove old filter
3. replace sump bolt
4. replace new subaru oil filter (i did not pre fill it) rub a little oil around rubber ring. and scew in place.
5. put new oil in engine (valvolene fully synth) about 4.5 ltr.
6. put key in.
started engine with no revs. oil light went out after about 1 or 2 seconds. turn engine off.

He actually, and you won't believe this, soaked his Oil Filter OVERNIGHT!!!
He went out into the garage every 30 mins to top it up HE DID!!!
Why? well I asked him why, and it went something like, "These filters take hours to soak and fill properly!"
I hope someone can find the post ....... he was really the wally of all time!!
These ***** minds work in a weird way, don't they??

Yes, next time i will just change as normal except pre-fill the oil filter (it only takes a few mins and i can see some logic to this).
Still no other explaination as to why the oil light should come on for so long after the change other than sticky sender unit (im satisfied it was not due to the .5 litres i missed out). Any other ideas?

I think everyone will agree, soaking an oil filter overnight takes the pee big time. Can you imagine it? Subaru garages up and down the country must keep shelves of ready filled filters and employ a special guy to topp em up every half hour so there ready when we drop our cars off for service.

no way mate I drink whatever I can get, which in germany is mainly lager but I tend to go for the Hefe Wizen cloudy wheat beer.
It gives you wicked trippy dreams if you drink to much of it

Drain it, replace the filter (making sure you apply a little oil to the gasket)..
Fill with the appropriate amount of fresh oil (dont guess!)..
Give the oil a chance to settle in the sump then start the engine, make sure the oil light goes out and let it run for a minute.. stop the engine, let it settle for a couple of minutes then re check the level.
Simple as that!
