It's cheap and it's convenient. that's why everyone goes. People don't seriously care else they'd go elsewhere.
meat is better from butchers etc. but how many people go there? For me, it's mainly inconvenient (work during day, leave just gone 8, back just b4 7 so they're closed but supermarkets are open) and also, as touched by someone earlier, it's free parking at supermarkets. If I could stop outside butchers etc., pop in and get some nice meat, on route then I probably would but instead I have to find a space, pay meter or get fined, walk to butchers, carry stuff 1/2 mile back to the car. then off to the greengrocers, then to stationers, then to etc... If only there was a place that had everything in one place with easy parking

Not too forget the jobs big places like supermarkets offer around the country with better than basic wage offering overtime and giving the customers 24hour service etc etc...

We shop at Sainsbury's, nice store, dearer than Asda but so worth it and our local Morrisons is also really nice compared to Asda.
We went to Asda for 8 years, and my mum still works there, but when Walmart took over the quality of service, number of staff, quality of produce AND quality of customers all hit the floor
Its now full of chavs nicking stuff, and also lots of immigrants with trolleys full of stuff who cant speak English, probably having their shopping bought by us, the tax payer.
The shelves are always empty, salad/veg is horrible and most of the shop id dedicated to really cheap low quality electricals etc

Yeah it seems like it most differentiate where you live.
My morrisons used to be a safeway. Safeway was expensive but atleast the products were of a good quality. Then morrisons took over and the prices near enough seemed to stay the same and the quality of prices went down. They dont sell as much healthy food. Most of their stuff is cheap filled with sugar. Most people wont notice it but because im a bodybuilder I check the conetents on everything.

Haven't got time to read all the posts but if your worried about Tesco running the high streets wait until Tesco purchase failing schools or bankrupt local hospital trusts.
Within a few years, you'll be able to earn clubcard points on your council tax.

They are providing a service by selling a big choice of food at cheaper prices.
The problem is that they have so much buying power that they can dictate price that they will pay to the farmers based on what it costs the farmer to produce the food. They are not paying fair prices so the farmer suffers and they make the big profits.
It's not fair that they can do that and also buy in cheap food form overseas which is not produced to the same high standard that it is produced to over here.
If this continues, and the family shops are killed off, then they will be able to dictate the quality of what they supply and higher prices in the future.

My local Tescos is driving me nuts... they've expanded to a humongous superduperMegastore & increased the parking... and it's always packed Not just with ordinary punters... theres loads and loads of Tesco employees wheeling round oversize trolleys with blue baskets on for internet shopping customers

Why are you all so negative about large supermarket chains moving into high streets and housing estates?
I do consultancy work for a major player and help develop new stores.
Initially other local traders are against them moving into an area, however after a couple of months all but the most inept of the local traders have experienced an increase in trade.
Small supermarkets attract the customers to failing shopping parades. These same shoppers then shop at the adjoining green grocers, butchers, bakers, etc and everybody benefits.

Having read all this Ive got to say most of it is total bollox!!!
Supermarkets only exist because we shop there and no other reason!! If you want to have a high street then support your local businesses otherwise dont moan.
I work for a supermarket and have to say all this bollox about meat not being as good quality is the one thing that I get most annoyed about. Big supermarkets are the ones that have very high standards from the herd being picked to being killed (humanely) and making sure it hangs long enough (the biggest complaint). We have people at every step checking the quality is not affected by any part of the process.
My parents had about 6 small shops from the late 70s to the mid 90s selling anything from fish to frozen food, fruit and veg to pop but when the supermarkets came they closed down the shops and diversified.
I have had a cracking 15 year career with my employer which has seen me go from shelf filler whilst at college to a senior manager and tbh, whilst not forgeting my up bringing, I thank them for that.
We forget that these companies have app. 600 per store employed so infact they are doing a great deal more for our economy then we give them credit.

No ones really this stupid are they???,
lets take one small thing about supermarkets, every one you visit has slightly different prices than another store........Why would this be????
Could it be that they charge as much as possible depending on competition???
No competition means they can charge what they like, So in the future when they have closed off all suppliers so that they can only supply Tesco (so no one else can sell the same products/type of food/meat/vegtable) that will be really great for everyone! (and they wont dictate the price, quality and type of food you can buy!)
