Personally I would want to drive to the bank with the bloke, and pay the cash in. If they accept the cash then you should be fine. Hand the keys over to the new owner and ask for a lift home
I think banker's drafts are fine too. If the bank accepts them. Not sure if there is any come back with them if they were fraudulently obtained. There was some scam with them, but if you call up the issuing bank and it is legit then I think you are fine.

I've bought three cars in cash and each time had to pay with a mix of Scots and English fifties and not had a single issue. Like any other notes a fake isn't tricky to spot, it just feels wrong. Check for the raised print along the top (whatever notes you get) and you won't go wrong.
Not many people forge fifties and that's what he'll be bringing you. Of course, if he turns up with 6k in tenners i would smell a rat!

This is true. I've lived in Scotland for four years (moved from London) and not seen a single forged note. They must all be in England already.

loads of local business`s recently got hit on the same day, asda across the road from us got hammered, people believe they are just different as they are Scottish and they hardly ever see them, yes they look wrong, but that's because they are not "English"
the problem gets worse as i think there is about 4 different types of Scottish notes?
the average person on the street will probably not come into contact with the fake notes, but if you are a business dealing with cash transactions, you tend to see a lot more, and end up taking in the cost of the fake notes when gimpy staff don't spot them.

Sold my last scoob to a Scot and he paid the full £15k in Scottish notes.
Paid em into my bank no probs - they counted them by hand but didn't check them for any dodgy notes.
The only problem is the time it takes in counting all that folding!

I'm a Jock, living in Hampshire, business account with RBS.
I once has the bird in the Southampton RBS look at some Scottish notes I was paying in and say "I'll just have to check with my boss if we can take these". WTF? THEY WERE RBS NOTES!!

have the sticker on the car, the amount of people that ask what it is
are you the red scooby wagon covered in wise words
as for thread i've been paid in scottish notes and would be happier taking them than a draft, remember a draft takes 5working days to clear (ask your bank) so it aint as good as cash!!!!!!!,
i couldn't believe people when i spent the money looking at it like it was something from mars
that bank of england statement is as clear as mud
fookin useless civil servants

It all boils down to one thing - would you know what a real Scottish note looks like? I wouldn't, and I'm certain that most of you wouldn't know what a real Guernsey or Jersey note looks like either.
If you're not sure, get him to pay you in something you know and understand.

Although the Channel islanders are clever enough to accept the inflow of Scots and English notes.
Funny that, the inhabitants of a few small Islands off the French coast a) know what real Scottish notes look like and b) are more than happy to accept them, yet in England, even in 2007, the ignorance knows no bounds.

We in the Isle of Man are happy to take any notes you have (as long as they are real) English, Scottish, Irish or what have you. MONEY IS MONEY!!! as long as it is pounds. Some places over here will even take Euros especially during the TT fortnight.
But the pain in the a$$ is that we have to exchange our Manx notes if we leave the island as our notes are not accepted anywhere except here.
Back to the Scottish note thing, you should have no problems with them mate as long as they are real, you can tell a real note from a dodgy one quite easily as the ink on a real note feels slightly raised off the paper, and the paper it is printed on is only used for money.
As others have said if you are uncomfortable taking Scots notes then ask the fella to go to the bank with you, I am sure he will understand and be quite happy to go with you as he will get his new car afterwards.
Oh and another point, someone before mentioned that note are ok as long as they have sterling printed on them. Manx notes do not have this on them and this was always everyones reason for not taking them but if you look at any recent English notes they do not have it printed on them either.

I go to Scotland twice a year and always try to offload my scottish notes before I get anywhere near the border on the way home...
It's not because I think they're fake, it's because of the hassle involved trying to spend the ******* once back home...
There are so many varieties of notes in Scotland (at the last count I think there were 325 versions of the scottish £10 note currently in circulation)
So to summarise, take the jock to the bank, get the cash counted there and then take him back for the keys... Jobs a goodun!
I bet he loves "Big Train"...
