Pete, I honestly think that you should go and find another forum/bbs that is more appropriate to your interest in Imprezas.
Scoobynet is a forum for enthusiasts of the marque : almost by definition such a word covers owners who appreciate the car for it's good as well as bad points as they see them in their own eyes.
If they see a certain aspect as being a weak point or an area that can be improved upon then often they will change this : to, in their eyes, improve the car. In other people's eyes that change will degrade the car but that owner has changed it to closer match what they want the car to do.
Lots and lots of Scoobynetters love the car but feel that modifying the car moves it closer to their ideal : why should that instantly make them a 'chav' or an idiot ?
If the Impreza was perfect when it introduced why has the company brought out a number of revisions ? Precisely because IT saw that certain areas could, in their eyes with a view to the market, be improved upon. Individual owners are also 'improving' or 'revising' their car because their 'market' is a market of 1 : themselves !

Tell you what ....... you go find another BBS - this one is MINE!!!

And I think the Impreza is just about PERFECT out of the box ... I actually, shock horror, bought a car I wanted - unlike the modifiers, who - for some reason did NOT buy the car they wanted!!

If they modified their cars and then blew them up .... and posted on here to say what idiots they had been, then FINE by me!!

However, when they come on here saying it's Subarus fault because they can't make cars ..... well then I step in you see? As what they should be saying is that they CANNOT drive cars properly.

That's the sort of well-argued post you should be making, Pete. The ones where you ridicule knowledgable people for no reason weaken your argument and turn people against you.

Pete, yet again ridiculous rantiing waffle from you.
Many people on here have bought their Impreza as it matches their requirements closer than any other car BUT it does not EXACTLY match them and these requirements may well change over the term of their ownership. Their requirements will no doubt include a budgetary element : if we all had an unlimited amount of money then most of us would be driving a different car I think !
As I said, personally I view this bbs as one for enthusiasts that can see the good and bad aspects of the Impreza - You only seem to see the good - I think many, many, many others on here do not think that it is perfect. It is good, in fact it is very good when you take into account the cost of a decent s/h model but with considered modifications it can, in the eyes of many, many, many owners, be improved.
I guess that for the few that drive the car with a view to only maximising the MPG and minimising brake pad wear then the car doesn't need modifying : maybe removing the turbo would be 1 mod you would be suited to though !

If I cared about mpg, really cared about it, I would not have spent £21,620 on a Subaru Impreza Turbo - 6 years ago!

Brake pad wear ... well, thats just happened because when I learned to drive I was taught that there is an egg under each pedal ... and I anticipate the road better than most and therefore brakes are for emergencies only!

I opted for the TURBO because I want the power now and again ... an old fella can still skip back a few decades in his mind you know? and want to drive like he did 'way back when'.

The Subaru Impreza Turbo is one of the best cars ever to grace tarmac and I hate to see it's name dragged through the mud by ****** who drive like *****!! Thats all

You continually refer to your credentials - a supposed qualified engineer. You use this in a vain attempt to gain some credibility for some of your stupid arguments on technical matters.

i would think there are plenty of people on here who are 'qualified engineers' but you are the only one who seems fit to continually mention it. Others put forward reasoned arguments because they understand whats going on. You put unreasoned arguments forward and then justify them by saying you are a 'qualified engineer' so you know everything there is to know about everything mechanical/electrical.

For a start i know many supposed engineers - desk jockeys - who can pontificate but when it comes to anything practical they are a waste of space.

im sure you would agree that the only way to REALLY learn and understand is to get your hands dirty. Zen performance, John Banks have shown this. You have shown NOTHING of the sort.

You have a perfect chance to shut a few people up. I will gladly eat humble pie and kiss your wrinkly old a$$ if you SHOW US your qualifications/credentials.

before you go on about my qualifications, I have a HND in mechanical engineering, and my 'specialist' area is crankshafts and camshafts. I am quite happy to give you proof of this if you are willing to make all the doubters see what a true genius you are undoubtedly are. Of course, a degree/HND undoubtedly means you are a genius and gives you the right to spout off at any given oppurtunity does it not?

as someone on the verge of trying to decide whether to buy a std UK classic or a WRX STI classic, this thread has truely confused me more than ever . My ONLY point against buying a jap import is the fueling issue.

Car I'm looking at is 100% standard. 60,000 miles on her, last 5000 in the uk. Has always been run on 97/98 in the uk and I will always it on that. I'm not run for reving the ***** off it 24/7, it will not be ragged from cold, and it will be left to cool down. Realistically, what are the chances of it going bang? And if ONLY people who know what there talkin about answer this that would be good!!

Is all the talk scare mongering? should i be afraid, or is there a real issue here for a driver like myself?

All the answers are in this thread already. The people who you should REALLY listen to are the guys who have mapped or do map different cars - they are the guys who really see whats happening. next up listen to the people who have had experience of failures in imports etc. Last up listen to the keyboard warriors who dont really have a clue and have no experience i.e myself, a few others, and most certainly PS lewis (who's only motives are to wind people up, not to help or advise)

I would say, Do the normal checks as you would for any car you were going to buy,If you are not sure, ask some from here if they might come along with you to have a look at the car with you,If you're a member of the RAC or AA ask them to do an inspection check on the car, this way if something does go wrong you might have some comeback.
Do a HPI check,You never know,
Does the car start, run ok with no strange noises,no coolant/oil leaks ?
Sevice history ?

If you do decide to go for the import, just have a quick chat with a profesional,Zen, Bob Rawl,AndyF,scooby clinic, they will put you right and help you keep the car in the way that it should be kept,so when you need to drive the car the way it should be,you wont have a problem.

This could have been an interesting question with an important conclusion, but we'll never know.

"How many people have blown up an engine in an unmodified import by running in SUL?"

That'd be an interesting one to see the answer to: however, the problem is that people buy imports to get the performance over the UK model, and then the first thing people seem to do is go for something to make them breathe better (filter, exhaust), resulting in more air going through the engine without necessarily increasing the fuelling. I realise that a MAF should see this increased flow and compensate for it, but history seems to show that it doesn't. Lean/Heat/Det...Bang.

I'd personally run an import on SUL, but I would fit a knocklink not through paranoia but out of good sense: you're running something with less of a margin of safety than it was designed to run with, hence a bit of monitoring isn't a bad thing. As soon as I wanted to consider mods, I'd be thinking of a remap. I couldn't justify an engine rebuild as a result of running with the wrong fuel, which does seem to happen whether you want to admit it or not.

If someone asked my opinion, that's it. Other opinions will vary...

Don't you ever bore of your crusades, Pete?

Aparently chairk, the well thought out use of a simple tool like a knocklink, qualifies you as an **** 'cocklink' user.

Perhaps you can answer me another interesting question. Why is this ignoarant know-it-all fool left to troll the boards; when other, smaller nuisances are treated in a far more heavy hannded manner? Is he Shaun's brother-in-law or something?

Ah well, if Pete thinks less of me than he does of others then I'll still sleep at night.

Regarding the other bit, I don't know what realistically can be done to stop him. If people stopped biting then he might get bored of it: people know he can be a tad argumentative and, at times, a wind-up merchant (along with nuclear engineer ) but still they bite...

Old ground but it is particularly MY99/00 that are to suffer from a KNOWN weak MAF sensor issue. If they fail, they start to lean out the mixture. Undetected and over a period of decent time it can cause severe detonation. That is a fact, if you run too lean your car wil detonate.

Its a fact the MAF's are weak on those MY's. It is also a fact that Subaru eventually introduced an improved "green dot MAF" as they must have become aware of the problem.

Further fact is that this problem is rare on cars > MY00 because again, the MAF was changed to a different type. Both UK and jap import cars, have had engine failures due to leaning of fuel. The Jap imports, and also the P1, have had numbers and numbers of engine failures. Fact.

I used to run my UK MY00 on SUL, and had to use a fill up of 95 ron on one ocassion. As soon as I put my fut down the ECU went into safe mode and the CEL came on, and upon pulling the code it was found to have been due to excess knock. So it does happen, but the ECU adjusts for it!

The newage STi's seem (from what the experts tell me) to be able to cope much better and quicker with lower grades of fuel.

What Pete does have a very valid point with, is have these failures purely been down to fuel and MAF, possibly, or have they been further exacberated by poor or not well thought out mods (induction kits / parts to cause further leaning) and that is probable.
