Its a very tough call to make as to whether a child is lying about something like this.

Not quite the same but in the same context - A colleague of mine has 3 children. I think it was the youngest of about 4 or 5 came home after school and said the Teacher had hit her. They sat the girl down and pointed out how serious the accusation was and was she completely sure of what she was saying. The child replied yes.

He went to the school and didn't act nasty but had to ask the question. The Teacher said that nothing of the sort had happened. When he went home and said the Teacher said she didn't hit the child, he asked her again and she said no it didn't happen. The child knew she was lying, was made aware of the consequences that she was lying but she did anyway.

As the community they live in is very small, this accusation got round the village and caused them so many problems that people stopped talking to them and they eventually took all 3 children out of the school.

If it were me I think I'd lay some kind of trap and see what happened. Approach the subject again with the child and ask about when it happens. From there create some sort of situation where the adult and child are alone but you have them on camera or taping whats being said. If something is happening you will find out for sure and have evidence for the police.

EDIT - If your asking should you tell the opposite parent, I'm not sure you have a choice but to tell.

not sure about that. social services have a less than perfect record when it comes to things like this. i'd explore it first personally and try to establish fact from fiction before getting the crypto-fascist state child-snatching department involved - you may end up being a suspect yourself without due care & attention. oh and losing your tin-lids to protective custody "just in case".

You forgot the small army of trained counsellors. Super experienced at 24 years old who have never had a kid between them.

Keep the two away from each other and send Grandpa to his room with Heat magazine and a box of Kleenex.......
