Yours is on the borderline Colin with that big garrett hybrid, FMIC and the large capacity 'built' bottom end you're running.
Part throttle on your car wouldn't be nice on a MAF.

Thats ok mate, don't think I've ever used part throttle in my life. Had pretty much decided to go MAP anyway as the £70 every 2k miles was adding up anyway.

It's up and running now so when I've got some miles on it I'll give you a call.

it measures the amount of air passing through the induction system.

when it fails it generally underreads - so the ecu doesn't put as much fuel in as it needs to for the actual amount of air entering the cylinder.

This results in an overly lean mix that is likely to det it's t1ts off under load.

The shock loading of this is likely to mash your bearings, if the piston doesn't fail first....

Nice eh ?

Its between the pink sticker & the two pipes (near the coolant res) and faces backwards as you look at the pic.
Normally has a grey wiring plug connector that you squeeze together to release the lugs that hold it on, then pull backwards to get it off.
The MAF comes out after you undo two security Torx bits - sometimes needs a gentle lever out with a small screwdriver as a rubber band helps seal it in.

BTW - The pic is off a MY99 / 00 version and the MAF is located on the side of the big pipe - hope that all makes sense

Is this method safe?

No, not safe.

Reset the ECU, if it idles rough then it is probably shot.

To verify this, beg, steal or borrow a wideband lambda and check the AFR at full throttle, it should be in the high 10's to low 11's at full boost/high revs. If it's in the 12-14 bracket then you have literally seconds to meltdown under these conditions
