I've some friends who are into pot-holing. Some of the cave systems they have been to are immense, you just can't see the drop because it's dark. One system in France is called Entre les Damned, it has a 400m entrance pitch (that's 400m vertical, >1200ft)
One rope would have too much stretch and would take so long to ascend that they rig it in a number of pitches. In other words they have to swap ropes several times on the way up and the way down. They are only on a single rope most of the time. They take very great care when rigging to avoid any rubbing points. What do you do when the ropes go over the corner of the building? I can't see how you would be able to avoid a rubbing point because there's nothin to attach runner to. Do you put something over the edge to offer some protection?
