Six hundred people – three-quarters of them children – suffer severe bath water scalds each year, with one youngster under five admitted to hospital every day and 15 pensioners dying annually after being injured in this way.

They have these special thermostatic taps in some hotel rooms - you can only turn the temperature to about 38 degrees and there's a stop, but you can then pull a safety catch to give you access to full temperature scalding. not a bad safety device to prevent toddlers scalding themselves. The main problem is with new 1/4 turn taps which you can't turn off hard enough. On the old 19 turns taps you can do them up nice and tight so you need to be the Bionic Man (as we're into 70's icons) to undo them.

these stats suggest that there should be:
1. more specific post-natal information given to parents about how to bath their children.
2. that elder citizens should check water temperature before they get in it only to scald their feet and genitals. and remember to add cold water.
3. that care homes should show more care and not dump unruly residents into scalding hot baths to teach them a lesson.
whatever happened to those handy public information films from the COI? or common sense for that matter. education not legislation.
this reminds me of of when a seriously stupid man tried to sue gillette in the 90s because he "warmed" up the lubrastrip of his mach3 in boiling water and then started to shave - only to burn his face.

The job of the government is NOT to add sponge padding to everything in life so we can bumper-car our way through it with our eyes closed. If we keep dumbing down and not educating then we'll end up with a nation of big children who can't do anything for themselves and cry when someone says 'boo'.
Another ridiculous idea.

i cant see the problem. it may be a bit nanny state but pick your battles on that issue.....this seems a idea with no downside.
right now some people get hurt (mostly kids) and have done for years...this bill stops that in most cases.....so who cares if it goes through?
you could argue the same about any saftey measure but then we would all live like they did 300 years ago......lucky to make 45!

Hot water burns kid, kid is more careful in the future.
Quite simple to me.
So we fit these magic taps and everyone gets used to them, what about when they fail, break or they visit another coutry
I like very hot baths, so I will now have to boil a pan of water or use the kettle though the house to the bathroom
Good old Tony helping us out!
Im sure there will be fines for people who dont comply

"Hot water burns kid, kid is more careful in the future"
unless he's 4 years old and slips when the water burns the flesh off his foot and then spends 20 secs thrashing about before getting out of the water.

From the BBC link. Another Tory MP talking sense on the issue.
However, Tory Peter Luff (Mid Worcestershire) said people should take responsibility for themselves and there should be an assistance scheme for the vulnerable.
He said: "Baths are not just for cleansing, they're also for therapy and I suspect your measure would get in the way of that particular liberty that I enjoy.
"It's often said that the state should keep out of the bedroom - it's my view the state should keep out of the bathroom as well.
"I think, frankly, this is an idea which deserves a cold bath but a warm welcome for the spirit in which you've moved it."
And it's not the tap water temp per-seé (sp?) that's the problem, it's the resultant temp of the bath. Most of us like to top up a cooling bath after a while with hot water to heat it up again. We'll have to add even more hot water to do this if the temperature of that tap water is being cooled before it even gets in the bath.

Our work has a hot water tap - I reckon you could put a teabag in a cup and fill it - the temperature would be fine .
Nothing wrong with fitting such safety devices if it helps save accidental scaldings - but I think most infant scaldings are more to do with abuse than accidents .

The safety device I have on my new shower is fine, it goes up to hot then u click a red button and it goes to (as you would call it) molten lava setting!
No need to mess around further!

"Are you sure you arent getting hot water mixed up with molten lava"
just saying what the docs say....the kids that are dead are dead, if you want to debate how hot the water needs to be to kill them i'm no expert so dont ask me!
"Only If you have left your 4 year old unsupervised in the bathroom"
if only life were as simple as relying on "if only"

Better ban kettles n'all!
Oh, and pans full of hot water - bang go any more boiled eggs then,
...and car radiators, i bet that there are some people who get scolded by them, so lets introduce low temperature engines.
Then there is that big sun thing, up in the sky burning 'ickle ones' skin in the summer - gotta do something about that. Compulsary tarpaulin overcoats need ordering for the entire population.
Lets face it, "if it save just one life"
...but - if only we didn't keep mollycoddling the general population by govenment diktat, maybe Darwin's Theory would sort out the runts, chavs, scroungers and dumbasses - and leave us with a stronger society!!!
