John, where did you find an Evo to test drive? Was it a new demo, or secondhand trade-in?

Cracking car John; absolutely love that interior. It looks like a motorway muncher or for fast A-roads to me. How does it drive/handle on those roads around your place?

I'd be scared to drive it hard enough down a single-track for fear of putting in a field

Was it a local Mitsi dealer you managed a test drive? I've been keeping my eye open for some used Evo's the past month or so.

The grip on dry smooth bends is phenomenal, if smooth it is seems very hard to get it to understeer. Oversteer is on tap in the wet in lower gears, not my cup of tea on road, but off the public road it could be fun. On the back roads around here, it is no Subaru/Evo - bounces/lack of suspension travel, brakes, traction.

There isn't much sensation of torque, gearing lasts forever, hides speed well etc.

Spoken to a gent about an FQ400 who has tried an M3. He is not sure about the M3, and I'm not sure about the FQ400 though.

I think the drivetrain on the GSR (which the FQ400 is built on) wouldn't take an unlocked MoTeC mapped to 500/450 on the stock turbo. OTOH, the IX GT is much stronger but has shorter gearing and no AYC which I think I want for a road car/average driver.

So I do think my solution is a GSR based VIII MR or IX with mods to 400/400 on all stock parts except exhaust, filter, fuel pump and remap. Buying a used one should keep the depreciation in check. Brake discs might need upgrading to AP Strap Drive or similar as they can "warp" as they are not mounted on alloy bells. The M3's are, but the pads are a little soft for hard use.

Yes it was a local Mitsi dealer.

John, you seem to be travelling down the same road as Sam "Dentist" Elssar, He has gone from M3 to Evo IX - now running 450bhp with minimal mods & mapping if magazines are to be believed. Maybe a shout to him would be a good idea & see his?

I have done, and have been in his car. It goes well.

I took the M3 for a run this afternoon, in the dry, temperature about 10C, best conditions I've really run it in so far. The biggest issue is not really torque, traction or brakes, but the way it is so stiff over rough surfaces or bumps and skips around. I've never driven an M3 on 18" wheels, standard is 255/40R18, 255/35R19 on at present. Quite an expensive experiment, but as a car to drive hard in good weather if it had better pads and a bit more compliance I would feel better about it...

Yes thanks. I think if I get one, I really want a GSR with the taller six speed gearing and AYC.

Hi John.

Lots of Evo8s in Top Marques for circa £17k onwards. If they weren't so god damn ugly I would buy one and do what you are planning. I'd keep a 'normal' car for work though!
