MJBR,
You really have swallowed the NL line hook line and sinker. We are more highly taxed now than for many years and it is getting worse. Why does he want to introduce a 50p top rate of tax? Why are we in the hole to the IMF for £11 billion? And why do they really want to have all our personal details on a national database and also available at a price to private companies!
Wake up!
Les

A large project to create and populate a national database as well as putting in place mechanisms to interogate the database...
Do you really think, based on NL's past history they can make it work? I suspect the answer is going to be a very expensive no.

Oh, and you can bet your *** that they will be embedding an RFID chip in the ID card, so they can keep track of you anonymously from yards away - every doorway you walk through, every lamppost that you pass. Look how CCTV has escalated over the last ten years or so - and imagine if every camera could immediately identify you as an individual (or rather, just a number). They could probably even track you through bedroom walls!!

If you're so worried about being tracked through your bedroom wall, leave you card on the table down stairs. As yet, I'm unaware of any requirement to keep your card on your person while sleeping in your bed at home.
As for RFID, unless they embed some infinite power source in the card, they'll only be able to track your movements from inches away and to be honest, if they're that close, they probably don't need to rely on RFID technology.

Or maybe you think the ID cards will come with a battery installed? That would be a sensible solution

Aside from the annoyance of the tracking aspects, there's also the bloody fact that you will have to carry it everywhere.
I hate carrying anything on my person, and on a night out I only take a sum of cash out, never a wallet, cards etc, so having to carry a card ALL the time will annoy me.

If you really want a case of paranoia, do a google search on OSI (Open Source Intelligence) and then spend a bit of time thinking about how this could be used in relation to the huge amount of information that the government is proposing to collect. Then you will understand why NATO, government, military intelligence etc is spending vast amounts of money on this subject.
Me? Paranoid? No, I just don't trust the b**tards

its not what they hold, its what they do with what they hold,
imagine if one day you went to make a phone call, and someone was listening,
your mail intercepted, your emails too, you find strange listening devices in your house, your family followed home,, you,d be the first on the phone to the bib,
what then if it transpires, your ID card was noted in a location deemed to be a terrorist hotspot, or area of survielllance, and by default you were under investigation, youd be pretty pissed off!!!
on the flip side youve all booked up for a family holiday, and as your about to board, you id card gets rejected, due to some unknown marker against you in the system??
turns out you have an outstanding parking fine, (which incedentaly has been paid) it puts the onus on you to prove your innocence, after all big brother never lies!!!!
we currently have a quite adequate identity card, its called a passport.

Just reading throught the Pro card replie,s and its interesting, not one of them has seem the huge fundemental flaw we are going to have
Human rights...
they keep banging on about the one who have nothing to fear have nothing to fear... and...
what about the ones who do have something to hide or fear???
we currently have in excess of 1 ? 2? 3? 4 ?? million ilegal immigrants in the UK, even the home office admits it dosent know how many are here...
are these people going to jump up in the air and shout me me i want an id card?? like ****,,, and how is the gov going to ensure everybody has a card...
well there you go.... welcome to **** Britian.... "your papers please" and who will be doing the enforcing?? the BIB ???
and what happens to someone who dosent have papers??? extradition? Now we all know they cant do that, so that scuppers that one, lock them up?? breach of human rights, force them to get an Id card, they,ll argue there from a european state that has its own system,
not such a good idea now is it...
if i recall didnt this happen in europe??
so then wha??t the holding camps ??? detention centres....
"you kneed a shower when you arrive" , just step through the door,,,
easy to see how another vision went wrong....

I'm a libertarian and as such agree with many of your points.
All I want to say is this, you aren't helping the cause! You're alienating the very people that you need to get on side. If you are as passionate about this as I think you are and you intend to continue speaking out, then do our beliefs justice by focusing on winning hearts and minds, not losing them.
Best wishes

So some Wackos have proven 2 feet? They're talking crap about 30 feet, as anyone who actually works with passive RFID tags will plainly tell you. And I'll guarantee you that's not 30 feet through a sodding great brick wall.
Besides, I've had you added to The List so they're already tracking your movements, phone calls and examining the contents of your last poo. Retreating to a log cabin in Montana is your only hope. Run, Forrest, run.
ID Cards are a ridiculous idea that will cost millions and won't solve a damn thing, but stop acting as if they're the one thing that means the difference between living in freedom and living in a concentration camp.

Ok then Rev, provide evidence that they wont make a differance?
Hitlers solution, started out semi idealogically, but developed into a massacre,
you seem to forget billy liar starts everything with one idea, and then it gradually spins, twists and turns ito the real thing he wants,,
just remember, these were never, thats right NEVER !! going to be compulsary,,,, and now they are!!!
what next?? genetic profiling? streamlining of genetic defects, blond blue eyed babys???
whenever teflon says its an idea, or it wont be, you can take it as read its going to or has allready happened.
unfortunatly you and i always pick up the pieces, or have to live with there f8ck ups, they walk away with no accoutability!!
just think about that

...and the Pentium processor still runs at 60MHz does it?? Technology will always improve, and with it the maintainers of "The List"'s ability to spy on us
Anyway, at least we both agree that ID cards are a pointless waste of money
Cheers,
