Well, what do I know?
I personally use what Subaru tell me to use, which is 10W-40 Semi
50 is very thick, I put that in my Calibra as it was on offer - it stayed in the engine for exactly 30minutes!! The engine was so sluggish .. went back to 10W-30 in that case and the engine returned to its sewing machine sweet revving self

Get your bum down to Vauxhall
Tell them your a member of one of the big vauxhall clubs and thus a member of the Trade club..
Box of 10w40 semi synth (4 x 5 litires) = less than £20.
And if you buy a crate its even cheaper, but take a trailer!

The Impreza needs a bit more than 4 Litres unless you leave the filter in place.
So, the extra 1 Litre costs, what? £13?
Thats £39 + £13 for absolutely no benefit whatsoever? £52!
Buying oil for £15 for 5Litres means, assuming a normal 6 month change, that you could change your oil every 2 months and STILL be better off .. and that is also better for your engine!
Fools and their money ...

The irony .. the word better was thrown in to show you how totally meaningless it is!
Of course changing the Oil every 2 months is not better than every 6 months (given the 7500miles/6 months limit) .. but I just BET a numptie like you actually thinks it is!

You really are limited in your supply of brain cells aren't you?
I used it as an example of the uselessness of the word 'Better'
By the way, your spelling in the thread directing people to this thread is terrible!! Try using OUR instead of ARE and you will not come across as someone for whom the Lobotomy failed!

o well, my spelling may be crap but i was too busy thinking about wether i should take your advice about changing oil more often than recomended.
dont change the subject, you just admited changing the oil in your car more often than recomeneded in the handbook.

Sorry about this, but, I draw the line at who I converse with - they need to act at least 30 and have more than one brain-cell.

going back to the topic, pslewis//mrreee is correct in saying use what grade subaru recommend (flame suit on), however depending on frequency of changes etc this could be fully synthetic of semi. More regular changes and use of the car then use the semi as it is more cost efficient to do so. If the car isnt used much then use fully synthetic (retains its properties for longer)
Also how the car is modified may have an input on oil choice, if the internal components are changed and therefore not standard, then I would take the advice of the engine builder as to what they recommend, as obviously subarus recommendation is on a standard engine.

Motul chrono 300v 10w-40, but at 70quid+ it's fecking dear!
I'd say stick with a 10w-40 fully synth, I had previously used castrol 10w-60 but found the engine to be rattley at cold starts.
Now on silkolene pro-s 10w-40 but not happy about it, may spring for the motul and change early next time.

OIL
Correct me if im wrong but if you change your oil early you might be wasting your money if you drive like a oap the engine isent stressed at all but if you drive like a demmon redline redline etc it would be fair to say change the oil more often simple with the recommended service intervals as they are chances are the oil will be ok, but who wants to risk it eh. not me
ill be using the full i am in mine, if it goes bang you know there was nowt you could do about it make sure you use a subaru oil filter as this does what it says on the tin filteres the oil .
cheers for the riviting read
mrReee your mad as a ships cat you are good laugh though .
